NUG calls on Quad to respond to Myanmar crisis

Ahead of the Quad leaders’ summit on 24 May the Myanmar National Unity Government (NUG) called on Quad to further develop practical measures and a coordinated response to the crisis in Myanmar in a 23 May statement.

The statement welcomed the Quadrilateral statement of 11 February 2022 by the governments of the Quad nations, Australia, India, Japan and the U.S.A. that called for an end to violence, release of all those who have been arbitrarily detained, and a swift return to “the path of democracy”.

But, the NUG statement says that three months on from the Quadrilateral statement nothing has changed and recommended that the Quad nations clearly state the following five points:

1 – violence will not be tolerated.

2 – Perpetrators of abuse against Myanmar people must be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

3 – The international community must respond to Myanmar's escalating humanitarian catastrophe.

4 – The Quad nations must do everything in their powers to restrict the sale of arms and jet fuel to the junta.

5 – The people of Myanmar should have the right to determine their own future free from military oppression and Quad should, without delay, establish a formal working group to develop a coordinated response to the crisis in Myanmar that promotes democracy and security for the region.

The Quad is an informal strategic forum of Australia, India, Japan and the U.S.A that holds semi-regular summits. It was founded by the four nations in 2007 and originally called the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD).
