Seven individuals connected to the killing of a pregnant woman in Monywa Town, Sagaing region, have been indicted with three charges, including one carrying the potential for capital punishment, by a National Unity Government (NUG) court.

A pregnant woman, Ma Aye Nyein Thu, from Htantaw Kyunswe Ward, Monywa Town, was killed by a group of armed men at her house on 10 August in the morning.

The seven men implicated in the incident were apprehended, and the NUG’s Monywa Township Security Team initiated legal proceedings with three separate cases under a local NUG court. On 23 August, the Monywa Township Administration, Security, and Defense Committee issued an official statement on the action.

The prosecuted cases are the Penal Code Article 395 (Dacoity), Article 396 (Dacoity with murder), and Article 397 (Robbery or dacoity, with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt).

The law states that a person committed under Article 396 of the Penal Code shall be punished with a death sentence or life sentence or up to 10 years of hard-labour imprisonment or by imposing fines.

The 25-year-old Ma Aye Nyein Thu, who was just days away from her due date, died from a gunshot wound. The child in her womb reportedly died. Those who committed the murder also allegedly took away two phones and a motorbike.

It is asserted in the statement released by the Monywa Township Public Administration, Security, and Defense Committee that those who committed the murder are Kywe Gyi (aka) Bo Ngwe, Pyone Gyi (aka) Kyaw Soe Tun, Aung Gyi (aka) Aung Myint Khaing, Bagyan (aka) Kyaw Thu San, Tattoo (aka) Moe Min Htet, Kayin (aka) Aung San Oo, and Kyaw Lay (aka) Win Min Htet.

The status of these men is unclear, with rumours that they may be members of a local defence force.

“They are kept in a prison and depending on the security situation, we are going to conduct procedures according to judicial measures,” an official from the Monywa township Public Administration Team told Mizzima.

The funeral of Ma Aye Nyein Thu was held on 12 August in Monywa Town with many residents attending and calling for justice.
