NUG minister says rights abuses getting worse in Myanmar

The National Unity Government (NUG) Minister of Human Rights Aung Myo Min urged the Czech Republic’s Deputy Foreign Minister to focus on the growing human rights abuses in Myanmar at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

The request was made during a meeting between the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr. Jiri Kozak and NUG’s Aung Myo Min at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Czech Republic on 9 June.

Following the start of invasion of Ukraine, the Human Rights Council suspended Russia, and the Czech Republic became a new member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Czech Republic has been supporting the promotion of democracy in Myanmar.

The NUG minister said the government has been very supportive of the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar.

Aung Myo Min discussed concerns about the about the military junta announcement that it would execute pro-democracy activists Ko Jimmy, Ko Phyo Zayar Thaw and other individuals under arrest, and the military junta killing of civilians and arson to villages across Myanmar.

Until 9 June, over a year after the military coup in Myanmar, a total of 1,924 people have been killed by the military junta according to a statement released by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
