The NUG says the Karuna Dispensary incident was a war crime

The NUG's Minister of Human Rights said the arrest of volunteers at the Karuna (compassion) Dispensary in Christ the King Cathedral compound at Naung Ya Ward in Loikaw township, Kayah State is a war crime. He said it has been enacted to attack and arrest humanitarian aid workers.

NUG’s Union Minister for Human Rights Aung Myo Min said, “Such arrests are not only a criminal offense under the Geneva Conventions but also threatens to restrict the activities of religious groups and religious volunteers. This should not be done at all. It remains to be seen how serious the crime will be."

On November 22, military council forces stormed Christ the King Cathedral compound and arrested 18 volunteers, including doctors and nurses.

The abbot, some of the nuns and some ethnic armed groups in the state met with military council officials and the detainees were released on 23 November.
