The National Unity Government (NUG) sent a formal message to achieve self-determination which is the goal of Karen people and to develop a federal democratic system in Myanmar.

The formal message of the National Unity Government was sent for 71st Karen Martyrs' Day Ceremony on August 12.

Saw Ba Oo Gyi, a Karen leader, and some of his followers were assassinated in Htokawkoe village, Kawkareik Township, Kayin State on August 12, 1950. That day has been designated by the Karen National Union (KNU) as Karen Martyrs' Day.
