The National Unity Government (NUG) delivered a message on 7 July to mark the 61st anniversary of student uprising against the miliary coup of former General Ne Win  in 1962.

The “7-July Uprising” lead to the massacre of more than 100 students by the army.

In its anniversary message, the NUG expressed recognition of the struggles of resistance forces, student unions and youth against the military for independence, equality, justice and truth, during which they often risked their lives.

The NUG also said that the Spring Revolution was aimed at stopping the massacres by dictators and would seek justice for the crimes against humanity.

On 2 March 1962, the Union Revolutionary Council lead by military dictator General Ne Win illegally took power from the elected government, and annulled the Rangoon University Act, leading to a student uprising, actions that led to the blowing up of the Rangoon University Students’ Union building.
