Acting president of the National Unity Government (NUG) Duwa Lashi La stated on the occasion of the 133rd International Workers’ Day (May Day) that he is proud of all the revolutionary forces and workers who have been fighting against the junta relentlessly for more than two years since the 2021 coup.

He made the remark in his official message addressed to the International Workers’ Day ceremony held virtually via the Zoom platform with the slogan "United Voice of Workers, Fight for a Federal Future".

The Acting President of the NUG emphasized the commitment to protect and promote workers' rights and outlined ongoing efforts to provide assistance and capacity-building to workers in cooperation with other NUG ministries.

“Workers are the backbone of our society, and the future federal democratic governance framework being developed by the National Unity Government has already included a commitment to protect and promote workers' rights. Currently, we are working with other ministries, including the Ministry of Labour, to provide assistance and capacity building to workers. We are also making efforts to expand these activities,” said the Acting President.

The NUG’s Labour Minister Nai Thuwanna said that his Ministry is providing the necessary assistance and care to the workers, and that violations of workers' rights have been recorded.

"Soon, in cooperation with the Myanmar Labour Alliance, we will draft a plan to speed up a process in order to cut off the channels of the Military Council's foreign income. Our Ministry of Labour is providing necessary assistance to the revolutionary workers as well as taking care of them. We, in cooperation with groups that handle labour issues, have built a single complaint mechanism to resolve violations of domestic and foreign workers' rights during this revolution. This will enable appropriate action to be taken once a legitimate people's government takes power.”

The NUG’s official Facebook page expressed its respect for the labour heroes who have stood up for and fought for the interests and rights of all workers throughout history.

Since the military coup in February 2021, many labour leaders and workers have been arrested for activities against the Military Council. So far, about 300 workers have been arrested and imprisoned, and 53 have been killed, the Myanmar Labour Alliance said in the virtual ceremony.
