A health worker (R) receives a dose of Covishield Covid-19 vaccine at Yangon General Hospital, in Yangon, Myanmar, 27 January 2021.

The health authorities in Labutta township are sending home people under 50 who suspect they have COVID-19 as they claim to have insufficient space to accommodate them.

According to a CDM teacher who has volunteered to help the health authorities, the focus is on people over 50 who have tested positive for COVID-19 and may need oxygen.

People who are under 50 who turn up to be tested for COVID-19 are not being tested but are being sent home and told to report to the authorities if they have symptoms and needed medicine.

The Labutta township, Labutta District, Ayeyarwady Region health authorities cannot provide quarantine or accommodation in the hospital or food, the teacher said.

“When we volunteered in the second wave, we were not concerned about quarantine. We worked with education staff and social organizations at that time. This fascist army (Military Council) has destroyed all preparation for COVID-19 as they don’t care for whatever happens,” said the teacher.

The number of Covid confirmed patients at the hospital and the Sibin guest house in Labutta has exceeded more than they can accept and there was is no place for COVID-19 patients.

About half of the 19 confirmed COVID-19 patients in Labutta were police and government staff.

It should be noted that the PCR test used to test for COVID-19 is reportedly unreliable, typically providing a large percentage of false positives. Even those who test positive may not have the virus and may have no symptoms.
