Junta leader Lieutenant-General Moe Myint Tun and the junta Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, U Nyunt Aung, are being investigated for corruption.

Moe Myint Tun was a close confidant of coup leader Min Aung Hlaing served as the Army Chief of Staff, the sixth highest-ranking officer in the junta, until he was stripped of his military position on 19 September.

He had also been the Chairman of the Central Committee for Ensuring the Smooth Flow of Trade and Goods until his arrest in the first week of September.

During August, the junta blamed unscrupulous businessmen for the rise in prices of commodities. Following the accusations several hundred individuals, including importers, exporters, bankers, and other entrepreneurs, were reportedly arrested and questioned.

As a result of the questioning the junta decided to interrogate Moe Myint Tun. It was discovered that he had accumulated millions of US dollars (USD) in bribes.

The junta also decided to investigate U Nyunt Aung who was a classmate of Moe Myint Tun in the 30th Batch at the Defense Service Academy. He has not attended any functions or been seen in public since attending a meeting organised by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) on 9 September.
