Seven wardens in Bago’s Taungoo Prison sentenced to six months for prisoners’ escape

After the incident of ten prisoners escaping from Taungoo Prison in eastern Bago Region, a news source related to Taungoo Jail revealed that seven jail wardens, including an officer, were arrested and subsequently imprisoned by the Military Council.

"It was reported that the military regime has arrested the jail officer and six warders for inquiry since 18 May, the day the ten prisoners escaped from Taungoo Jail," said a news source.

Then, a lawsuit was filed against them, and the Taungoo Prison Court sentenced each of them to six months in prison on 17 July, according to a news source close to the prison.

"Currently, they are detained in the Taungoo Prison," the same news source added.

A source close to the prison stated, "I don't exactly know what section they are filed against. They were sentenced on 17 July. And, many of the prison warders have also been transferred."

The imprisoned Taungoo jail warders include Officer U Kyi U, Warden U Than Tun, Warden U Tun Tun U, Lieut. Sergeant Thant Zin Win, Lieut. Sergeant U Toe, Kant Si Thu and Poe Kout.

On 18 May, the ten prisoners in Taungoo Jail attacked the guards and ran away with the weapons while on the way to the special prison court.

During the attack, nine prisoners managed to escape, while one was left behind after being hit by a bullet and later died.

Prison Sergeant Maung Myo, who was guarding the prisoners, was shot to death on the spot by the escaped prisoners.

After that, the two remaining guards, Deputy Police Aye Thaw and Sergeant Kyaw Htway, were arrested and interrogated by the junta. Tragically, Sergeant Kyaw Htway died during the interrogation on May 29, as reported by Mizzima.

The nine escaped prisoners from Taungoo jail were identified as Ko Thant Zin, Ko Aung Kyau Oo, Ko Bay Da (aka) Bhone Nyunt Zaw, Ko Zin Ko Ko Aung, Ko Thiha Aung, Ko Nyein Chan Aung, Ko Toe Naing Tun, Ko Sithu Than Aye and Ma Khin Myo Kyi.

They are charged under Sections 49(a), 50 (a), 50 (j), 51 (c), and 52 (1). Among them, three have been sentenced to death.
