SNLD will not discuss elections with Myanmar junta till end of 2022

The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) will not discuss elections with the military regime until the end of 2022, according to the SNLD.

At a meeting with the New Mon State Party (NMSP) on 23 May, the junta chief Min Aung Hlaing talked about holding a general election in August 2023 and then transferring power to the winning party.

Sai Kyaw Nyunt, an SNLD spokesperson, told Mizzima that the party’s Central Executive Committee has decided not to negotiate with the junta about an election until the end of 2022.

On 26 July 2021, the junta-controlled Union Election Commission (UEC) announced that it had rejected the outcome of the 2020 General Election in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) secured a landslide victory.

The SNLD did not agree with the UEC’s rejection of the 2020 election results and said that the UEC decision was unfair and goes against the 2008 constitution, which the junta believes is still in force, despite opposition groups saying it is no longer in force because the coup was unconstitutional.

The SNLD won more parliamentary seats than any other ethnic party in the 2020 election.

The SNLD has been ordered to present its financial records to the UEC for inspection by 30 June.

The political party has stated that if the UEC wants to inspect its records it will have to inspect them at the SNLD party headquarters because the party will not take its financial records to the UEC offices.
