The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • The NUG made a commitment, keeping in mind the need to put an end to the impunity enjoyed by the military junta, they would maintain their effort until the victory of the revolution.
  • The NUG stated that only the military junta had been guilty of treason and other crimes, and they must inevitably receive the verdict of the public.
  • At 9:00 am Friday, there was a meeting (22/2022) between the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration and Extended Public Administration Teams.

Revolution Activities

  • The spokesperson of the European Union claimed that the junta’s further sentences imposed on State Counsellor Daw Aung San Su Kyi and President U Win Myint were unlawful and it was just an act to exclude them from the political field.
  • On Saturday, a rally of Mandalay Pyigyi Dagun protested against the military dictatorship, holding signs - ‘If we don’t take to the streets, they will enter our houses’.
  • With a banner- ‘Despite the arrival of 2023, we will keep fighting until we win’, rallies in Mandalay expressed their objection to the military dictatorship on Saturday.
  • In Wandwin of Mandalay Region, young people conducted an anti-junta movement by placing the banner - ‘2023 is the end for the military dog’ somewhere in town.
  • In Myothit Township of Sagaing Region, a combined force of local PDFs attacked a car of the junta armed forces. Reportedly, 7 junta members died and their weapons were confiscated.
  • On Saturday, a combined rally of local villages from Yinmabin and Salingyi marched against the military dictatorship.
  • In Myinmu, there was a mine attack on the junta soldiers using passenger cars for mobility. Reportedly, there were casualties in the incident.
  • In Monywa, U Kyaw Than and Ko Min Khant Ko, two hearing-impaired men, were each sentenced to 10 years in prison under Section 50 (J) and 52 (A) of the counter-terrorism law on Friday.
  • On Saturday, a rally of Yinmabin North marched for the end of the military dictatorship.
  • In Tamu Township, allegedly Pyusawti members killed Ko Chit San Maung and his wife, who had opened a tea shop in Myoma Ward.
  • On Friday, Kani Army-KNA announced that they had conducted an attack firing projectiles at the airport of Northwest Military Headquarters in Monywa to say goodbye to the old year.
  • In Taninthayi Region, a convoy of 10 military trucks set fire to 32 houses from 3 local villages along the road from Palaw to Pulaw.
  • At the trial inside Insein Prison of Yangon Region, a political prisoner expressed his disapproval of the military dictatorship, holding a private protest.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • Karen National Union-KNU Brigade (2) called on the public in Taungoo District to completely protest against the junta’s election in 2023.

The Military Council

  • At 10:30 am Friday, the junta Myanmar Ambassador to China met with Director General of the Department for Border and Oceanic Affairs under the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
  • The military junta announced that more than 150,000 students had registered to sit for the matriculation exam which would be held in March 2023.
  • In a statement to the public, the junta Central Bank of Myanmar mentioned that they had no plan to change the current reference rate of foreign currency exchange or print any new form of money notes.
  • The junta propaganda announced that the junta peace team had met with the special envoy of Asian Affairs from the Chinese Foreign Ministry for the stability of the border area between the two countries.

Summary on 31 December

  • In Kayin State, there have been battles on a daily basis. The same is true for Sagaing Region and Magwe Region. Reportedly, the junta army has had a great loss.
  • Starting from December, there have been frequent battles between the junta armed forces and PDFs in Taninthayi Region. As usual, junta soldiers with a great loss have been burning the people’s houses. As they might continue to do the same later, the people should take preventive measures.
