The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • The NUG Ministry of Defence announced that the People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) had conducted strategic attacks on 19 military targets in Magwe Region on 8 and 9 February.
  • In Washington D.C in the United States on Monday, there was a meeting between a team led by the Vice-Chair of the International Republican Institute and a delegation led by the Chair of the Committee Representing the Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH).
  • The NUG Union Minister of Foreign Affairs claimed that the U.S Government had approved the request by the NUG for official relations with them as a legitimate government.
  • In the area under influence of the NUG in Tanintharyi Region, there were educational talks for local people about preventive measures against the junta’s air strikes.
  • On Tuesday, the NUG Karenni State Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the Loikaw-Solase-Dawtamyay-Dawtamagyi-Bawlake road would be indefinitely closed for military reasons.

Revolutionary Activities

  • Reportedly, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Myanmar will have to report to the UN Security Council by 15 March at the latest on whether the military junta has been following the decisions made by the Council on Myanmar’s Affairs on 21 December 2022.
  • In Sagaing Region, a combined rally of villagers from Salingyi and Yinmabin marched against the military dictatorship on Wednesday.
  • In Yinmabin North, local people marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship on Wednesday morning.
  • In Pale Township, the junta armed forces have been carrying out operations throughout the Pale Township area. As a result, residents from 13 villages have had to run away.
  • In Kani Township, the KLG PDF donated rice and edible oil to fire victims from Natlabo North Village.
  • In Yinmabin Township, the Basic Education Students’ Union financially supported 82 families from a local village with 20,000 MMK per household affected by the junta’s burning down of houses.
  • Since the declaration of military rule in Khin-U Township, the junta armed forces have invaded and set fire no less than seven villages in the area within nine days.
  • At about 8:15 pm on Tuesday, there was a surprise attack on the junta army in Monywa. Reportedly, two junta soldiers died.
  • At 6:00 pm on Monday, there was an attack with 120mm grenades on the junta North West Military Headquarters. According to the Chindwin Attack Force, there were casualties and damages.
  • In Myaing Township in Magwe Region, local residents donated pieces of jewelry and money worth 180 lakh MMK to two local PDFs.
  • In Seikphyu Township, two women, one of whom was disabled, from Taung Village were killed by the junta army.
  • In Yebyu Township in Tanintharyi Region, there was a guerrilla attack on a junta army convoy on the Yay-Dawei Road at about 2:00 pm on Sunday. Reportedly, more than 10 junta soldiers died and about 10 others were injured.
  • In Thayawady Township in Bago Region, PDFs conducted an explosion as a warning to Pyu Saw Htee members under the military junta in Thonese at about 9:30 pm on Tuesday.
  • In Paung Township in Mon State, Myint Yi, a local leader of the junta People’s Army, was shot by the members of a Special Operation Force in Yinnyein Village at about 7:00 am on Wednesday.
  • In Yay Township, the MSRO attacked the gate of the junta army Regiment (587) base in Aryutaung Village at 6:30 am Tuesday.
  • On the one-year anniversary of the Urban Task Force Aung Ban (UTF), there was a march and military performance on Monday along with speeches by their leaders and awards to the sports teams.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • In the Kawthoolei Administrative Area under the Karen National Union (KNU), there were more than 430 battles in January. According to KNU Central, over 460 junta soldiers died and many others were injured.
  • On Wednesday, the Karen National Liberation Army Headquarters stated that Tanintharyi Region Kaw Thoo Lei Army Special Forces 1 had been spreading propaganda to divide the Karen Revolution and Spring Revolution with the purpose of bloodshed among ethnic Karen people and that it was necessary to identify the perpetrators.
  • In Shan North, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army inspected grocery shops in Selant Village between Muse and Namkam on Wednesday to see if they had been selling junta army products.
  • According to a spokesperson of the Chin National Front, the junta army suffered great losses in local battles in Chin State and have been getting reinforcements from Rakhine State.
  • In Shan North, the junta army carried out an aerial bombardment of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) Brigade (6) Regiment (9) headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.
  • In Shan North, there have been constant battles between the junta army and the KIA. According to a KIO spokesperson, the military junta has been trying to gain influence in the area ahead of their elections.

The Military Council

  • According to the junta committee on the development of electric vehicles, five more sets of electric vehicle chargers have arrived.
  • On Tuesday, U Soe Kyi was appointed as the junta Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
  • On Tuesday, there was a meeting between the junta peace team and the NMSP (New Mon State Party) for the second day.
  • On Tuesday, the junta Minister of Religions and Cultural Affairs stated that the post-graduate diploma course on the Myanmar Calendar would be opened starting from May in the 2023-24 academic year.
  • In a coordination meeting on Tuesday, the junta Minister of Economics and Commerce stated that it was necessary to export more onions.
  • The military junta announced that 651 schools had been bombed and burned and 66 teachers had been murdered throughout the country in the two years since the coup.
  • Reportedly, three military officers from the junta army Regiment (403) were arrested for refusing to fight.
  • According to military sources, the junta army started with its special operation with aerial attacks in Chin, Karenni, Kachin and Kayin states.
  • According to sources from the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC), the military junta bought another charge under Section (52-A) of the anti-terrorism law against their former Chair Rev Dr Hkalam Samson.
  • According to the junta Directorate of Investment and Company Administration, there has been over 820 million USD of foreign investment in the electricity and energy sector.

Summary on 16 February

  • On the battlefield in Kayin State, the junta army has suffered great losses. Reportedly, three military officers who refused to fight are being prosecuted. There is a sense of fear in the army and little unity.
  • In Shan North, there have been daily battles between the junta army and the KIA. The military junta has been using airstrikes to try and gain control of the area for their election.
  • In Sagaing Region, more and more local people have had to flee their homes because the junta armed forces have been killing people and burning villages. Therefore, there will be a need for emergency food supplies.
