The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • The NUG Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration announced on Monday that 27 non-CDM staff members working at the junta Education Department, Health Department and Agricultural Department had defected to the NUG.
  • In Khin-U Township in Sagaing Region, there was a face-to-face meeting on Monday between the local public administration, local defence forces and community leaders of a village.
  • According to the NUG Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, four staff members of the military junta were caught while collecting household population data. There will reportedly be legal action taken against them under counter-terrorism law.
  • In Khin-U Township, local public administrations and local people’s defence forces managed to set up the 103rd village administration and the 114th village defence force.
  • On Sunday, there was a meeting between the NUG Central Committee about the Interim Public Administration and Public Administration Teams from Tanintharyi Region and Ayeyarwady Region.
  • In Bago Region, the Oatpho Township Public’s Administration announced that that there would be serious action against the junta pillars as well as the individuals and organisations implementing the junta’s faked election.
  • The military junta has been making an effort to collect population census and voter lists for the illegitimate election to be held in 2023. Pale Township Public Administration called for no participation in such an election.

Revolutionary Activities

  • In Hlaing Township in Yangon Region, a fallen drone attached to a home-made bomb was found on the bank of Inlya Lake in Ward (10) on Monday morning. Reportedly, the same thing happened in North Okkalapa Township and Wanetchaung Village in Hmawbi Township.
  • In Thaketa Township, Tun Tun Win, a hundred-household leader and an activist for the junta election, was shot dead at about 6:00 am on Sunday.
  • On 6 January, five bombs were found near the Cooperative Ministry Office in Nay Pyi Taw. According to sources, security measures have been tightened around the area and some of the staff members are hesitating to come to the office.
  • On Monday, a combined rally of villagers from Yinmabin and Salingyi marched against the military dictatorship.
  • In Yinmabin North, a rally of local people protested against the military dictatorship on Monday.
  • In Sagaing Region, Taze General Strike expressed its objection to the junta’s illegitimate election on Monday.
  • In Pale Township, there was an attack on the junta army who were burning Kobin Village on Sunday. Reportedly, two junta soldiers died and many others were injured.
  • In Pale Township, a combined force of local PDFs attacked the junta army and Pyu Saw Htee from Kandaunk Police Station on Saturday. Reportedly, there were casualties among the junta members.
  • From 10 to 15 January, the junta armed forces raided five local villages in Pale Township and set fire to 113 houses.
  • In Monywa Township, there was a close-range attack on two unmarked junta cars at about 5:00 am on Sunday. Reportedly, a junta soldier died.
  • In Ye-U Township, the junta armed forces invaded and burnt local villages in recent days. As they entered Khin-U Township, over 3,000 people from five villages had to run away.
  • In Maha Aungmye Township in Mandalay Region, U Saw, the administrator of Bawdigone Ward, was shot dead at 1:15 pm Sunday.
  • In Seik Phyu Township in Magwe Region, there was a bomb attack on Hsone Siyar KTV, where the junta army had been taking security measures, on Friday.
  • In Myaing Township, PDFs conducted an attack with mortars on the Pyu Saw Htee Village where the junta army had been staying. Reportedly, there were casualties among junta members.
  • In Thayet District, there was a mine attack on the junta gate at the entrance to Kamma.
  • On Saturday, local PDFs announced that they had conducted bomb explosions on the junta immigration offices to show their disapproval of the junta’s faked election in Thayet District.
  • In Kyaukgyi Township in Bago Region, there were eight attacks using drones on the junta army camp at about 9:00 am on Sunday. Reportedly, eight junta soldiers died and so did two Pyu Saw Htee members.
  • In Tanintharyi Region, a comrade from a Pulaw-based PDF lost his life in a battle on Saturday. Reportedly, his dead body was taken away by the junta army.
  • In Dawei Township, four men carrying illegal drugs were arrested on the Dawei-Htiki Road while PDFs were carrying out inspections on Saturday.
  • In Dawei, the military junta sealed off a house in Shanma Leswe Ward.
  • In Loilinlay in Karenni State, three family members were hit and injured by a mortar fired by the junta army on Sunday.
  • The younger son of Daw Aung San Su Kyi called for the participation of the general public in the painting campaign supporting CDM staff and IDPs.
  • In states and regions including Sagaing Region and Magwe Region, the junta armed forces have been invading and burning local villages. According to Data for Myanmar, nearly 50,000 people’s houses were damaged by the end of December 2022.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • In Kayin State, Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade (6) announced on Monday that the road connecting KyarIn Seikgyi and Phaya Thonesu will be restricted for a week.
  • A spokesperson for the KNU claimed that KyarIn Seikgyi- Phaya Thonesu Road had been closed due to safety concerns for travelers.
  • In the Theinni Area of Shan North, there was a battle between the junta army and the MNDAA on Friday. According to the Kokang, over 30 junta soldiers died.
  • In Matupi Township in Chin State, there was a battle as the junta army invaded the area. According to CDF Matupi, a junta soldier died.
  • On the 60th anniversary of Revolution Day on Thursday, the Secretary General of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) claimed that they would join the fight against the terrible military dictatorship.

The Military Council

  • On Sunday, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said there would be more development in the Narga Area of Sagaing Region.
  • In a meeting with MSME business people on Sunday, the junta leader said that it was necessary to grow more rubber in the Hommalin Area.
  • The junta Minister of Home Affairs ordered that a watch be kept on CDM staff as they could do harm to the military junta.
  • In a coordination meeting with legal officers, the junta Yangon Regional Chief Legal Officer said that it was necessary to finalize the cases in court.
  • The junta Ministry of Health announced a vacancy for 200 doctors by 27 January at the latest.
  • In the junta newspapers, the junta organisations strongly condemned the mortar attack on the opening ceremony of the 71st Kayar State Day.
  • According to the junta Ministry of Trade and Commerce, about 3 billion USD was earned from the export of farm products in the first nine months of 2022-23 fiscal year.
  • The junta Union Supreme Court released the judiciary strategy plan (2023-2027) and the first year strategic plan (2023).

Summary on 17 January

  • For their political escape, the military junta has been collecting population census data by force. The NUG and PDFs have called for no participation in such a faked election.
  • With a great loss, the junta armed forces have suffered great losses and continue to burn villages. Consequently, local people have had to run away and seek shelter elsewhere.
  • The KNU announced that the public should not use the Phaya Thonesu- KyarIn Seikgyi Road as there might be heavy fighting in the area in a few days.
