Spring Revolution Daily News for 18 February 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • On Thursday, the NUG released a statement welcoming the pledge of the Singapore Foreign Minister that Singapore would ban the export of weapons and military-related items to Myanmar. 
  • On Wednesday, the NUG expressed their support for the summary on Myanmar by the Malaysian Prime Minister in a speech. 
  • Ministry of Defence-NUG called on the junta officers, soldiers, police and departmental staff to give information safely to the NUG without worry. 
  • In a press conference in Washington DC on Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs-NUG claimed that their government had to face a lot of challenges when keeping the revolution forces under a Chain of Command. 
  • At 3:00 pm Thursday, there was a meeting (7/2023) between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and District People’s Administrative Teams. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Sagaing Region, a combined rally of Salingyi and Yinmabin, surrounded by youth from Monywa Youth Association, marched against the military dictatorship on Friday, raising anti-junta banners. 
  • On Friday morning, a rally of Yinmabin North marched for the end of the military dictatorship. 
  • In Yinmabin North, there was a rally in a village for democracy and against the military dictatorship on Friday at dawn. 
  • In Chaung-U Township, the junta armed forces stationed in Kangyigone Village set fire to Wayar Village and Yargyi Village. Reportedly, over 100 houses were burnt to ashes. 
  • After the declaration of military rule in Khin-U Township, the junta armed forces burnt over 500 houses in 6 local villages from 8 to 15 February. 
  • In Shwebo Township, the junta armed forces set fire to 6 local villages within 5 days. Reportedly, they were attacked by PDFs using mortars and 4 junta soldiers died. 
  • In North Okkalapa Township of Yangon Region, a hand-made bomb was found and exploded near a beer shop in Ta Ward on Thursday night. 
  • In Thabaitgyin Township of Mandalay Region, there was a mine attack on a military convoy on their way back from Myataung battle at 5:20 am Friday. Reportedly, 10 junta soldiers died. 
  • At about 11:00 am Thursday, there was an attack using a variety of mines on junta vehicles carrying fuel oil from Meiktila to Mandalay. Reportedly, 2 cars were damaged. 
  • In Pakkoku Township of Magwe Region, there was an attack on the junta army camp in Shwebonetha Village at about 11:00 am Thursday. Reportedly, there were many casualties among junta soldiers along with damage to their weapons house. 
  • In Yesagyo Township, there was an attack on the junta army on secret patrol south of Kanthit Village on Thursday afternoon. Reportedly, there might be casualties in the incident. 
  • In Gantgaw District, Htilin Township People’s Security Force opened a short course of public’s police procedures to 19 trainees on Tuesday. 
  • In Myeik Township of Taninthayi Region, there was an attack on the junta army gate at the crossroads of Tonthayawgyi Village at about 6:00 am Friday. Reportedly, a junta soldier died and a gun was confiscated. 
  • In Longlone of Taninthayi Region, allegedly a junta Pyusawti member was shot dead at about 6:00 pm Thursday. 
  • In TeeTain Township and Tunzan Township of Chin State, the training for people’s police started on 1 February and successfully completed on 16 February. 
  • According to People’s Embrace, there were frequent battles against important targets in recent days due to the information of the junta members and departmental staff. 
  • The political prisoners in Mandalay Obo Prison wrote letters calling for effective action against the junta prison staff who had beaten the female political prisoners and for protest against violence inside prisons. 
  • Burma Human Rights Network based in London stated that there had been up to 379 people who lost lives within 24 hours after the junta’s arrest or who died of violent activities in the junta’s investigation. 
  • On Wednesday, there was a telephone meeting between the Foreign Minister of Indonesia (Chair of the ASEAN) and the US State Department regarding the plans of ASEAN for the current year including Myanmar affairs. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations 

  • On Tuesday and Wednesday, the junta army conducted aerial bombing using 6 fighter jets in the area under Karen National Union-KNU Brigade (5) in Kayin State. According to the KNU, a large number of public’s houses and schools were burnt down to ashes. 
  • On Thursday, CDF Senthang announced that two soldiers from the junta army in Hakha of Chin State joined the public, together with weapons. 
  • Karenni National Defence Force-KNDF Regiment (16) called for public’s contribution for the procurement of weapons. 
  • For CDF Kanpetlet, Chin people donated some money and over 60 Gayals. 
  • In Thantlang of Chin State, local CDF attacked the junta army stationed at TBC Church on Thursday morning. Reportedly, 2 CDF members lost their lives. 

The Military Council 

  • In the Friendship Forum in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing stated that Myanmar and Russia would cooperate in various sectors including trade, tourism, culture and sports. 
  • According to the sources from the junta air force, military officer Thein Htoo, former commander of Tada-U Air force and the main responsible person for the junta air strikes including the one with casualties of nearly 100 people in Hpakant, was promoted and transferred to Myitkyina Air Force. 
  • The junta Chair of Central Bank claimed that they had already set criteria against the flow of criminals as well as the money and property gained from crimes, into the financial institutions. 
  • Starting from 1 March, 65% of the income from the export of border trade will have to be exchanged with the referenced rate of the junta Central Bank. 
  • According to the junta newspaper, Nga Myin, the only regional fish species that can be found only in Myanmar among the ASEAN countries, will be bred commercially and is regarded as the national fish. 
  • According to the junta committee, charging stations are being constructed for electric vehicles in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw. 

Summary on 17 February 

  • Singapore, the largest investor for the junta, banned export of weapons and military items to the military junta. In other words, it is an effort to put pressure on the military junta. 
  • In Magwe Region and Chin State under control of People’s Defence Forces, People’s Police Forces were formed and there were courses for effective rule of law.
