The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • On Tuesday, the NUG conducted its 19th government meeting. There, the Acting President stated that Spring Development Bank needs to be a financial pillar for the lifeblood of the revolution and a financial safety for the public’s prosperity.
  • According to the NUG, a total of 435 people from 7 states and regions lost their lives and some others went missing due to the consequences of the Cyclone Mocha.
  • Ministry of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Risks Management- NUG announced that about 1,000,000 people and 500,000 houses in northern Rakhine State have been badly in need of assistance due to the Cyclone Mocha.
  • The Ministry of Health- NUG stated that floods can have negative impacts on public health and lack of food safety in disaster-hit areas can worsen it.
  • At 1:00 pm Tuesday, there was a meeting between the Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration- NUG and Township People’s Administration from Yangon Region.

Revolutionary Activities

  • In Sagaing Region, a rally of Yinmabin North marched against the military dictatorship on Wednesday morning.
  • In Kani Township, the junta army conducted air attacks on two local villages at 2:50 pm Wednesday. Reportedly, there might have been casualties among local people.
  • In Myinmu Township, there was a mine attack on the junta army on 14 May. Reportedly, many junta soldiers got injured.
  • In Kantbalu District alone, over 50,000 people have had to run away due to the invasion and the airstrikes of the junta armed forces.
  • The military junta reduced the capital punishment of 38 people to lifelong imprisonment. According to the Students’ Union, it was still unknown whether 7 students of Dagon University have been on the list.
  • In Ayeyarwady Region, Kyankhine Township Strike Committee protested against the military dictatorship, holding anti-junta signs.
  • In Pauk Township of Magwe Region, the makeshift tents of the IDPs got damaged by the Cyclone Mocha on 14 May. Reportedly, they were rebuilt by members of the PRF.
  • In Bawlake Township of Karenni State, the junta army conducted an aerial bombing on Sawlone Village at about 4:00 am Wednesday. Reportedly, a young woman aged 17 lost her life and 8 houses including the rural clinic were damaged.
  • In Kachin State, the junta army silently placed the posters on lamp posts. Reportedly, it was about financial rewards for PDF members who join them together with their weapons.
  • In Hpakant Township of Kachin State, the junta army arrested no less than 30 people including pregnant women on Wednesday morning.
  • In Phayar Thonesu of Kayin State, youths conducted an anti-junta movement on Tuesday, placing the photos of Min Aung Hlaing on tombs.
  • In Tokyo of Japan, Myanmar people protested against the Chinese Communist Government for joining hands with the military junta. Reportedly, it was in front of the Chinese Embassy on Tuesday.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • The headquarters of the Karen National Union Brigade (5) announced on 8 May that they had resigned because the KNU failed to take action against some of their leaders who got involved in illegal businesses.
  • In the area under KNU Brigade (5), 26 junta soldiers including officers died whereas the KNLA lost two comrades in local battles from 1 to 15 May.
  • In Mone Township under the KNU, the junta soldiers under the pretence of being PDF members sent for 20 local people and killed them.
  • In Myawaddy Township of Kayin State, there were exchanges of fire at about 3:30 am Wednesday. Afterwards, the junta army conducted an aerial bombing.
  • In the area under the KNLA Brigade (8), the junta army raided local villages on 14 May. According to KNU Central, over 8000 people from 8 villages have had to run away.
  • In Bawlake Township of Karenni State, there was a clash between the junta army and Karenni combined force. Reportedly, no less than 5 junta soldiers died and weapons were confiscated.
  • In Hpakant Township of Kachin State, there have been ongoing battles between the junta armed forces and a combined force of the KIA + the PDF starting from 13 May. Reportedly, 4 junta soldiers died whereas a PDF member got injured.
  • The KNDF extended their raffle campaign for 10 more days as they did not meet the target of 2,000 bullets within the specified period.

The Military Council

  • On Tuesday, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing claimed that Bagan is an irreplaceable cultural heritage for Myanmar and thus, it must be maintained.
  • On Tuesday, the military junta declared 4 townships of Chin State to be disaster-hit areas.
  • According to the military junta, 21 people lost their lives and over 10,000 houses from the states and regions were damaged due to Cyclone Mocha, as of 15 May.
  • On Tuesday, 200,000 gallons of diesel arrived at Shwemingan Port in Sittway, in the storm-hit area.
  • To cheer up the victims of Cyclone Mocha, artists from Myanmar’s Motion Picture Association left for Rakhine State on Wednesday.
  • In a meeting with the junta Minister of International Cooperations, the new representative of the UNHCR claimed that they were getting ready to assist the victims of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.
  • On Tuesday, the junta Ministry of Health issued health guidelines for the victims of Cyclone Mocha.
  • On Wednesday, the new representative of the UNHCR gave her credential to the junta Minister of Foreign Affairs.
  • In the junta private school law, there are provisions against talks on politics and political parties at private schools.
  • The junta universities and colleges will open their courses on 1 June.
  • Myanmar’s Farming Development Bank told farmers about the loan program for the rainy agricultural season in 2023.
  • The junta Union Election Commission approved the registration of the Inn National Party and the Kokang Democracy and Unity Party.
  • The military junta announced that they had arrested those who robbed Kyel Cin Lin Jewelry in Ward (9) of Thaketa Township in Yangon Region.

Summary on 18 May

  • The junta leader signed the private school law containing the provision against teaching about politics. In other words, they have been trying to block off the access of youths to political knowledge.
  • In Karenni State where there is much revolutionary activity, the junta army has continued to conduct airstrikes. Consequently, there are only civilian casualties.
