The Military Council

  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that those who had been overstocking medicines and other medical supplies and making them expensive would be identified and legal action would be taken against them.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that ethnic armed organizations had contacted them for vaccination in their areas. Therefore, responsible personnel from states, regions and self-administered regions needed to collect data and take action in respective EAO areas in accordance with priority groups set by the Ministry of Health.
  • The junta leader instructed responsible personnel to oversee and take action against unfair overcharging although it was acceptable that prices of basic food items had gone up naturally due to higher costs of transportation and labour, caused by travel restrictions for the control of the pandemic.
  • The junta leader said that regarding emergency rescue, related activities would not be stopped till the end of the rainy season and money would be spent on natural disasters.
  • Through their newspapers, the military junta have been calling for a contribution from the public to buy COVID-19 vaccines.
  • With the excuse of not reporting the overnight guest list, the junta armed forces have been arresting some people in Yangon Region.

The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • Together with Myanmar people from all over the world and international friends, the NUG signed an online petition for keeping the position of U Kyaw Moe Tun, Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations.
  • U Aung Myo Min, Union Minister of Human Rights- NUG, said that a special report on the crimes committed by the junta army in Kani area was submitted promptly for a special meeting of the UN Security Council on Myanmar’s affairs, which would be held on Tuesday.
  • The Acting President of the NUG said that organizing and advisory groups were established for the accreditation of keeping U Kyaw Moe Tun as UN Ambassador in September as it was important for international recognition. Besides that, the NUG needed to make policies for the discussion with ASEAN Representative to Myanmar during his trip to the country.
  • Acting President of the NUG said that COVID-19 Commission, led by Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, had been trying their best in coordination with local and international organizations for prevention and control of the pandemic.
  • In a regular meeting of the NUG on Tuesday, Acting President said that responsible personnel had been doing preparations for the inevitable fight to protect the lives and property of Myanmar people who were at risk of being killed on a daily basis. After setting the date for D-Day, it would be submitted to the Cabinet and decisions would be made.

Revolution Activities

  • In South Dagon Township of Yangon Region, U Nyan Tun, 100-household leader in Ward (57), was shot dead on the spot by two unknown gunmen at about 11:30 am Tuesday while he was in the office.
  • In Kamayut Township, Tin Hla, allegedly an informer to the junta in Ward (3), was shot dead at about 5:00 am Tuesday.
  • In Kachin State, Pha-Kant townspeople marched against the military watchdog on Tuesday morning. They also showed their support for KIA and PDF.
  • In Magwe Region, there was a bomb explosion at the check-point on the entrance to Salin, where the junta armed forces had been taking security, at about 10:00 am Tuesday. According to local sources, a policeman died and two others were injured in the incident.
  • On Monday night, Mandalay Monks’ Union recited Parittas for the public as usual and protested against the military dictatorship.
  • On Tuesday, Mandalay Monks’ Union led an anti-junta movement, reciting Parittas.
  • According to protest leaders, the junta armed forces arrested Ko Kyaw Thiha and Ma Piti, members of Mandalay University Students’ Union who had been protesting against the military dictatorship, on Monday evening.
  • As 160-day protest, a rally comprising various villages from Salingyi North and Yinmabin East expressed their desire for the downfall of the military dictatorship on Tuesday morning.
  • In Sagaing Region, Kalay residents protested against the military dictatorship on Tuesday.
  • In Tantsi Township, the public made a farming strike against the military dictatorship on Tuesday morning.
  • In Myaung Township, Aung Myint Sein, junta-appointed administrator of Thahtegone village, was killed by his head being cut at about 7:20 pm Monday. A trainee of Pyusawti, who was with him, was injured in the incident. Reportedly, it was done by the group of Bad Guys with Good Hearts.
  • In Kani Township, the junta armed forces were stationed in the school of Tanaungpaka village on Tuesday morning. Therefore, the villagers had to run away.
  • In Mon State, Mawlamyein youth conducted an indoors strike for the end of the junta army on Tuesday.
  • In Yay Township, U Ko Ko aged over 50, Pyusawti member in Acin village, was shot dead near Phewi monastery at about 6:00 pm Monday.
  • A combined force of 6 local PDFs; SS-PDF in Shan South, Phekone PDF, Moebye PDF, Loikaw PDF, Dimawso PDF, (the ones from Karenni area) and Naypyidaw PDF, established an alliance. On Monday, they announced that they, in cooperation with EAOs, would fight against the military dictatorship.
  • According to INDF on Tuesday, a policeman from Nyaungshwe police station in Shan State joined Inle National Defense Force.
  • In Longlone Township of Taninthayi Region, residents of Nyinmaw village expressed their desire for official recognition for the NUG and against the military dictatorship on Tuesday morning.
  • In the rural community of Longlone Township, there was a protest against the military dictatorship on Monday, “Only NUG is the government in Longlone”.
  • In Longlone Township, a rally of Lower Yebyu village led an anti-junta movement on Tuesday evening.
  • In the eastern area of Dawei, residents made a night strike against the military dictatorship on Monday.
  • In Kayin State, a man on a motorbike threw a brick at Myawady District Administration Office. According to residents, he was shot and arrested by the police in charge.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • According to Thule Newsletter on Tuesday, the junta armed forces had been conducting more military operations in Kyaukgyi Township, area of KNU.
  • In Thatone District which is the operation area of KNU Regiment (1), the junta armed forces have been strengthening their manpower with a large number of soldiers. According to an officer of KNU in Thule Newsletter, they were getting ready to fight back if the junta army conducted invasion.
  • On 73rd anniversary of Karenni Army Day, a ceremony was held in the area of Karenni Army Regiment (1) on Tuesday.
  • In Moegoke Township, the junta army Ka-La-Ya (148) invaded near Hoewait village and thus, they were attacked by a combined force of KIA and PDF Moegoke at about 11:30 am Monday. According to the announcement of PDF Moegoke, 6 junta soldiers died and many others were injured.

Summary on 18th August

  • Amidst tight security measures in Yangon, there were guerrilla revolution activities. Due to violent crackdowns in Mandalay, young protesters were arrested. However, public protests still had great momentum.
  • In Sagaing Region, public protests had great momentum and so did the armed revolution. As for the junta armed forces, they had been strengthening their manpower there and oppressing residents. Consequently, the whole village had to run away. In Magwe Region with just a few protests, guerrilla attacks took place now and then in recent days. In general, there were more guerrilla activities rather than public protests.
  • As dollar prices have gone up due to high inflation in the tenure of the military junta, the prices of basic food items have increased. In addition, the prices of imported medicines and other goods have been on the rise as well. As the military junta could not make the value of Myanmar currency strong, they just used the old method in a threatening way.
  • As for the NUG, they had been trying to gain recognition at the UN and in the international community. To show public support for them, they sold the Spring lottery. Besides this, they had been doing preparations before D-Day in the whole country. The date might be set in the very near future.
  • As the junta armed forces invaded the areas of EAOs, there were battles in Kachin, Kayah, Kayin and Shan North.
