The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • In the New Year’s speech, Acting President of the NUG claimed that 2023 was a very important year. He also called for collective revolution against the military junta and caution against the division.
  • Acting President of the NUG stated that they had discussed with all ethnic revolution forces to fight against the military dictatorship and they had been joining hands for that. He also pointed out that the military junta had lost in the United Nations and the international community, and they had been trying to find the escape by holding an election.
  • On International New Year’s Day, Chair of Committee Representing Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) stated that even amidst hardships, the public kept committed to the resolution and they managed to show such strong spirit to the world. He added that such people became the tonic for them as well as the driving force to try harder.

Revolution Activities

  • In Mawlight Township of Sagaing Region, the junta army ill-treated and shot dead 4 people including a child aged 7.
  • In Kani Township, a combined rally of Yinmabin, Salingyi and Shwe Nwe Thwe protested against the military dictatorship.
  • On Sunday, a combined rally of local villages from Yinmabin and Salingyi marched against the military dictatorship.
  • In Minkin Township, the junta armed forces set fire to Mataw Village and Latpanseik Village on Sunday morning.
  • On Sunday, a rally of Yinmabin North marched for the end of the military dictatorship.
  • In Myinmu, there was a mine attack at 3 junta soldiers near the statue of the General. Reportedly, two of them died.
  • In Monywa, anti-junta youth led a march against the military dictatorship on the dawn of New Year’s Day.
  • In Hlaingthaya Township of Yangon Region, Ye Tun Oo, the junta administrator of Ward (20), was shot dead.
  • In Yangon, there were anti-junta posters on the morning of New Year’s Day.
  • In Taninthayi Township of Taninthayi Region, there were attacks at the two locations where the junta armed forces had been stationing. According to Myeik District Battalion (2), 7 junta soldiers died and a gun was confiscated.
  • In Mandalay, youth conducted an anti-junta movement on Sunday.
  • In Mandalay, the junta army arrived while a group of young people were arguing and quarreling in a beer shop. Reportedly, junta soldiers opened gunfire and a young man lost life.
  • In Thegone Township of Bago Region, there was a mine attack at the three junta policemen who were to remove anti-junta posters. Reportedly, one of them died.
  • As a part of Nan Htike Aung Military Operation, there were attacks at the three locations where the junta armed forces had been stationing in Bago on Saturday night.
  • In Kachin State, a rally of Phakant gems workers marched for the end of the military dictatorship on Sunday, chanting anti-junta slogans.
  • In Gyeongju of South Korea, there was a New Year’s event against Myanmar’s military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • According to the health sources from Nay Pyi Taw, the military junta has been demanding the arrest of CDM doctors all over the country.
  • In Longlone Township of Taninthayi Region, there was a night strike themed ‘Turn fear into strength’ on Saturday.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • In the New Year’s speech, General N’Ban La, Chair of Kachin Independence Organization- KIO, claimed that the military junta was not only the enemy of ethnic revolution forces but also the enemy of the whole public and thus, they would decisively fight such enemy.
  • Nyo Tun Aung, the Second Military Chief Officer of the ULA/AA, stated that they were not the bystanders of the Spring Revolution.

The Military Council

  • In the statement on ceasefire and eternal peace, the junta office of Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services announced that they had extended the suspension of military movements from 1 January to 31 December 2023.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that they had been making an effort for the country to be peaceful like before.
  • The junta leader said that they had been trying to conduct the election all over the country.

Summary on 1 January

  • According to the speeches by the NUG and leaders of ethnic revolution forces, there might be severe attack at the military junta led by Min Aung Hlaing in terms of diplomatic, military and economic sectors.
  • After the coup, some EROs and the general public have been fighting against the dictatorship throughout the country. At such time, the military junta announced the ceasefire, which did not work at all. They tend to do so whenever they face a great loss. However, they easily break their promise when they get the better. As for some ethnic armed organizations which believe in the junta promise, they should learn lessons from the past.
