Spring Revolution Daily News for 20 August 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • The Ministry of Defence-NUG announced on Saturday that they had rewarded 33 lakh MMK to a policeman from No. (17) Police Force under the military junta in Naypyidaw, who had defected to the public along with weapons. 
  • In Moekok Township and Sintku Township of Mandalay Region, the revolution forces attacked the junta armed forces. According to the Military Headquarters under Ministry of Defence-NUG, no less than 5 junta soldiers died and many others were injured. 
  • On Saturday, there was a meeting via Zoom video conferencing between Sagaing Forum Team and Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Reportedly, they discussed the affairs of the displaced people in the region. 
  • In Mintone Township of Magwe Region, there were attacks on the junta inspection gate of Mintone Bridge and No. (5) inspection gate at about 4:00 pm on 15 August. According to Ministry of Defence-NUG, 7 junta soldiers died. 
  • On Friday afternoon, Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG conducted training on conflict management for Township People’s Administration in Yangon Region. 
  • On Friday morning, there was a meeting between Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and People’s Police Force. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Dibeyin of Sagaing Region, there was a bomb attack via drone on the junta army taking security at Myanma Economics Bank at 5:30 pm Friday. 
  • In Kalay Township, the junta army set fire to Thazi Village for four consecutive days. Reportedly, they destroyed the whole village. 
  • On Saturday, a combined rally of Salingyi and Yinmabin marched for the boycott of the junta army products. 
  • In Kantbalu Township in the face of poisonous snakes, venoms have had to be purchased from outside. Kyunghla-Kantbalu. Activists called for public’s contributions. 
  • In Chanmya Thazi Township of Mandalay Region, there were grenade explosions in front of the junta immigration office and the junta administration office on Friday afternoon. Reportedly, 7 civilians got injured. 
  • In Myaing Township of Magwe Region, the PDF attacked the junta army stationing at Well 2 Oil Field at about 4:00 am Thursday. 
  • In Yesagyo Township, there was an attack on the junta inspection gate in Kyaukhlegar Village on Pakkoku-Mandalay Road at about 9:00 pm Friday. Reportedly, there were casualties among junta soldiers. 
  • In Pakkoku, there was an attack on the junta inspection gate on Industrial Zone 6th Street on Friday afternoon. Reportedly, 3 junta soldiers including a captain died. 
  • The junta lobbyists spread the news that the PDFs had been entering Yangon. Consequently, the military junta conducted more checks of overnight guest lists. 
  • In Phyuu Township of Bago Region, the junta army Regiment (439) fired mortars on Friday afternoon. Reportedly, civilians were injured. 
  • In Oatpho Township, U Thaung Lay, allegedly a Pyusawti member, was shot dead in Wine Village at about 11:00 am Friday. 
  • In Thayetchaung Township of Taninthayi Region, anti-junta youth led movements for boycott of the junta army products in 3 local villages. 
  • In Kyankhine Township and Myanaung Township of Ayeyarwady Region, the junta army has been frequently firing heavy artillery into local villages since 19 July. 
  • In Mon State, the revolution forces conducted inspection for the safety of the area at 6 places including the entrance to Theinzayat starting from 7:00 am Friday. 
  • In Bamaw Township of Kachin State, the junta army arrested over 50 people in Myale Village on Saturday morning. 
  • On Friday, Assistance Association for Political Prisoners called on the international community to take responsive action against Myanmar’s military junta committing crimes of lawless activities against prisoners. 
  • According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Saturday, nearly 18 million people or about one third of Myanmar’s population have been in need of humanitarian aid due to ongoing conflicts and natural disasters. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • In Karenni State, there were heavy battles between the junta army and Karenni revolution forces for two weeks on Demoso-Fruso Union Road. According to Karenni Nationalities Defence Force on Saturday, 71 junta soldiers died and weapons of various types were confiscated. 
  • In Kyaikto Township of Mon State, Karen National Liberation Army and the PDF conducted inspection on the road at the entrance to Theinzayat for the first time on Friday morning. 
  • In Myawady Township of Kayin State, the junta army has been fighting hard to get back Mount Latkhat Camp controlled by the KNLA and the PDF. Nevertheless, the junta soldiers have not been able to approach even the foot of the mountain. 

The Military Council 

  • The junta propaganda team stated that that a person who filmed to defame the Buddhist religion had been arrested. 
  • According to the junta Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA), foreign investments worth 467 million USD entered the country from April to July in 2023-24 fiscal year. 
  • According to the junta Ministry of Economics and Commerce, Myanmar-China border trade was worth 1.47 billion USD from 1 April to 4 August in 2023-24 fiscal year. 
  • According to the military junta, 8 PDF members from 5 Townships of Yangon Region defected to them on 16 August. Reportedly, 50 PDF members had done so in the month. 
  • After the US Government placed economic sanctions on Myanma Foreign Trade Bank and Myanma Investment and Commercial Bank under the military junta, the dictators have had to seek the mediator in foreign currency and international banks for foreign trade. 

Summary on 20 August 

  • Due to lack of economic stability and uncertainties following the military coup, foreign investments have decreased gradually. It has significantly fallen compared to that in the administration of the civilian government. 
  • After the sanctions on the two junta banks, the military junta has had to look for foreign currency urgently.
