Spring Revolution Daily News for 20 May 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • Ministry of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Risks Management-NUG announced on Friday that within the two years after the establishment of the NUG, they managed to provide humanitarian aid worth 6.6 billion MMK to the people who had to suffer because of the military junta. 
  • On Thursday morning, the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration conducted a meeting. There, the Chair of the Committee and Union Prime Minister stated that it is necessary for the Complaint Letter Central Committee to carry out activities swiftly and efficiently. 
  • On Thursday, the NUG equipped Gantgaw District PDF Regiment (13) with arms. 
  • At 3:00 pm Thursday, there was a meeting between Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and District People’s Administration. 
  • In New Zealand, Union Minister of Human Rights-NUG met with the Attorney General and the Minister of Immigration on Wednesday. Reportedly, they had friendly discussions about Myanmar’s affairs. 
  • According to the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Judiciary Affairs-NUG, they have been carrying out activities to take action in the case of an alleged 5-year child rape in Mae Sot on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. 
  • Ministry of Defence-NUG confirmed that 9 out of 10 PDF members, who had run away from Taungoo Prison after seizing guns and opening fire on junta members, arrived at a safe place. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Sagaing Region, a rally of Yinmabin North marched against the military dictatorship on Friday. 
  • In Shwebo, there was an attack with two grenades on junta soldiers getting drunk at the palace site at 1:40 pm Thursday. Reportedly, 7 of them died. 
  • In Kantbalu Township, the junta army shot dead 2 local residents and injured 2 others. 
  • In Kantbalu Township, the junta army burnt local villages and took away the public’s belongings. 
  • In Yinmabin Township, the social group named Anyar Pyit Tie Taung Lay Myar provided food to the flood victims from two villages. 
  • On Friday, Ko Wai Moe Naing, the leader of Monywa Strike, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for treason. 
  • In Hmawbi Township of Yangon Region, there were bomb explosions at about 8:30 pm Thursday. 
  • On Thursday, 5 young people were sentenced to capital punishment and lifelong imprisonment in the case in which junta policemen had been shot on a city train in 2021. 
  • In Chanmya Thazi Township of Mandalay Region, there was a grenade attack on the house of Than Naing, the junta hundred-household leader and Pyusawti leader in Aungpinle Ward, at about 7:00 am Friday. Reportedly, his mother died. 
  • In Patheingyi Township, there was an attack using 40mm grenades on the administration office of Myakantha Village at about 10:00 am Thursday. 
  • In Myingyan Township, there was a mine attack on the junta army on Thursday morning. 
  • In Yebyu Township of Taninthayi Region, there was a bomb attack via drone on the junta army stationing in Dawei Special Economic Zone on the morning of 14 May. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died. 
  • In Bago Region, 10 prisoners ran away from Taungoo Prison. Reportedly, 9 of them arrived at the liberation area. In the incident, a junta soldier died and 4 guns were taken away. 
  • In Ayeyarwady Region, Kyankhine Strike Committee protested against the military dictatorship on Friday, holding anti-junta signs. 
  • In Hinthada, there was a bomb explosion in front of the railway officer housing at about 5:00 pm Thursday. 
  • In Myawaddy Township of Kayin State, the junta army conducted an aerial bombing on Mekane Area and fired heavy artillery on Thursday. 
  • According to the Institute on Strategies and Policies of Myanmar on Wednesday, there were over 1,400 battles in 115 townships in the first four months of 2023. 
  • The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated again that they still have been negotiating with the junta authorities to gain access to Myanmar to supply humanitarian aid in the wake of Cyclone Mocha. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations 

  • In the area under Karen National Union Brigade (3), there was an attack using a sniper on vehicles carrying injured junta soldiers. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died and 3 guns were confiscated. 
  • In Mu Township of Kayin State, the junta armed forces have been abusing local people as human shields and invading local villages. 
  • Ta’ang National Liberation Army announced on Thursday that they had arrested a man who raped a mentally-ill young woman over and over again. They added that there would be legal action taken against him under the TNLA law. 
  • On Thursday, the 7 Ceasefire EAOs announced that they would strongly support the political solution to the political crisis. 

The Military Council 

  • On Friday, there was a meeting between the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and new Cambodian Ambassador to Myanmar for direct flights in Nay Pyi Taw between the two countries. 
  • On Thursday, the junta leader claimed that there must be solutions for the increase in students attending schools and the grade transfer rate. 
  • The second junta leader Soe Win stated that 3,000 tons of rice in reserve had been sent via water route to Rakhine State for the rehabilitation. 
  • The military junta announced that they would send army officers to the storm-hit areas to take more effective action for rehabilitation. 
  • The military junta announced that up to 145 people had lost their lives in Rakhine State due to Cyclone Mocha. 
  • On 9 May, the junta Ministry of Trade and Commerce announced that there must be registration for the storage of 1,000 rice bags or 50 tons of rice or 5,000 paddy baskets and above. 
  • The military junta announced that they had been combing the area for the 10 prisoners who had run away from Taungoo Prison. 
  • Throughout the country, the junta police have been placing posters calling on PDF members to give up arms for financial rewards. 

Summary on 19 May 

  • The military junta has oppressed well-known protesters with long-term imprisonment under a variety of unlawful charges. 
  • The military junta has not allowed yet the entry of the vehicles carrying rescue teams and rations from international organizations including the United Nations and civil society organizations for storm victims. In other words, it is a violation of human rights.
