Spring Revolution Daily News for 21 May 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • According to Committee Representing Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), the military junta has arrested nearly 130 elected MPs since the coup on 1 February 2023. Reportedly, 16 MPs lost their lives in prison or while running away. Besides, 4 others had their citizenship revoked. 
  • At 12:30 pm Friday, there was a coordination meeting between the NUG Central Committee on the Interim Public Administration and People’s Administration from storm-hit townships from Sagaing Region, Magwe Region and Bago Region to provide emergency assistance. 
  • Ministry of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Risks Management-NUG announced that they had supported over 840 lakh MMK to the victims of Cyclone Mocha. 
  • In the area under Karen National Union Brigade (6), Special Operation Force under Ministry of Defence-NUG completed their sniper training on Friday. 
  • Myanmar’s Permanent Representative U Kyaw Moe Tun called on the United Nations Security Council to put an end to the import of weapons to Myanmar’s Army and transfer the army officers, who committed crimes, to the International Criminal Court (ICC). 
  • For the children of Myanmar refugees in Mizoram State of India, Myanmar Refugee Committee Saiha opened a refugee school recognized by the NUG on Friday. 
  • On 16 May, Committee Representing Chin Hluttaw announced that Myanmar citizens are not to get involved in the political affairs of Mizoram State in India. 

Revolution Activities 

  • In Sagaing Township of Sagaing Region, there was a bomb attack via drone on the camp of Pyisawti Militia in Nyaung Ngotto Village at about 2:00 pm Thursday. 
  • The S&C donated 12 solar power stations, produced on their own, to the IDPs in Sagaing Region. 
  • On Saturday, a combined rally of Salingyi and Yinmabin marched against the military dictatorship. 
  • On Saturday, a rally of Yinmabin North led an anti-junta march. 
  • In Khin-U Township, the junta army set fire to Kanthit Village on Saturday morning. 
  • In Khin-U Township, there was a mine attack on the junta army on Saturday morning. Reportedly, 4 junta soldiers including an officer died and their bodies were discarded by burning. 
  • In Kani Township, the news came out that the junta army would conduct an aerial bombing. Consequently, local people had to run away on Saturday morning. 
  • In Yinmabin Township, Bant Two Force managed to produce a wide range of weapons from gas guns and Tumi guns to M4 weapons. 
  • In Pakkoku of Magwe Region, there was an attack via 5 projectiles on No. (101) Army Regiment at about 11:00 am Friday. Reportedly, they hit the target. 
  • For food sufficiency, the members of Pakkoku District Regiment (6) grew ground nuts while protesting against the military dictatorship. 
  • In Ayeyarwady Region, Kyankhine Township Strike Committee protested against the military dictatorship, holding anti-junta signs. 
  • In Oatpho Township of Bago Region, junta soldiers arrested a couple on Friday morning, accusing them of being PDF members. They then raped the woman. Afterwards, they shot dead both the wife and the husband. 
  • In Yay Township of Mon State, there was a battle between the junta army and local PDFs at about 8:00 am Saturday. 
  • On Saturday, the people conducted an online movement, calling on the G7 leaders to take effective action against Myanmar’s military junta. 
  • On Friday, Sawti Township Karen Social Organization called on local and international human rights organizations to take action against inhumane human rights violations of the junta army. 
  • A total of 30 Shan Civil Society Organizations called on the armed forces in Shan State to respect international human rights laws. 
  • On Thursday, Shan State Foreign Investment Monitor announced that the company owned by the United Wa State Army has been going on with the construction of Nammatu Reservior amidst objections of the local community. 
  • According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, up to 3,558 people have lost their lives until 19 May due to the junta armed forces since the military coup. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations 

  • In Dimawso Township of Karenni State, 3 junta troops invaded the area on Friday morning. Consequently, there were local battles, causing a great loss for the military junta. In response, the junta army conducted air attacks via fighter jets. 
  • In Mu Township of Kayin State, the junta army shot mortars to local villages on Thursday morning. Consequently, a child lost their life and over 10,000 people from 9 villages had to run away. 
  • In Maukme Township of Shan State, there was a local battle between the RCSS and the PNLO/PNLA on Saturday morning. 
  • According to a focal person of the PPST, New Mon State Party suspended their membership from the PPST and they no longer discussed with the military junta. 
  • In the area under CDF Matupi, there was a great loss due to Cyclone Mocha. Reportedly, they have been badly in need of shelter materials. 
  • For Rakhine people who faced a great loss due to the storm, Ta’ang National Liberation Army donated 500 lakh MMK to the Arakan Army. In response, the Chief Military Officer of the AA provided a thank-you certificate. 

The Military Council 

  • On Friday, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing told the navy youth and their supervisors in Nay Pyi Taw to brighten their corner in nation building. 
  • On Friday morning, the second junta leader Soe Win inspected Kyauktaw and Yathay Taung, hit by Cyclone Mocha in Rakhine State. He then provided food to the victims. 
  • On Friday morning, a ship from Indian Navy carrying relief items and rations arrived at Yangon Port. 
  • The military junta announced that there would be legal action against the media outlets which wrote 400 Rohingya people lost their lives due to Cyclone Mocha in Rakhine State on 14 May. 
  • In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Myanmar-Russia diplomatic relations, there has been a show of over 100 artifacts and Myanmar lacquerware in Moscow. 
  • The junta Union Election Commission announced that Union Development Party applied for registration on Friday. 
  • On Friday morning, the Chair of the junta proxy Union Solidarity and Development Party provided money and food to the USDP members who had faced Cyclone Mocha in Sittway in Rakhine State. 
  • The junta customs department announced that there would be automatic licensing for 3,075 imports starting from 1 June. 
  • In Myawaddy Township of Kayin State, a junta army sergeant shot himself dead reportedly due to the fact that he was not able to return to his family for more than two years since the military coup. 
  • In Bamaw of Kachin State, there were exchanges of fire between the two junta soldiers at Inwa Bank on Thursday. Reportedly, one of them died in the incident. 

Summary on 21 May 

  • After the coup, the military coup arrested the MPs from the opposition unlawfully, imprisoned them and killed them. In other words, they have been carrying out activities to crack down on the opposition. 
  • Due to one-sided discussion of the military junta, New Mon State Party suspended their peace talks. It shows that the peace process of the military junta has not succeeded yet.
