The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • At 1:00 pm on Wednesday, there was a meeting between the NUG and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) for their joint statement for the New Year.
  • On behalf of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the NUG welcomed the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for its resolution on Myanmar.
  • The NUG Minister of Human Rights pointed out that the the UN Security Council resolution on Myanmar excluded the ban of weapon sales to the military junta and also lacked statements about how the international community would take action if the military junta fails to improve its behaviour.
  • The NUG expressed its sorrow for the Karen ethnic people who had to welcome their New Year with a sense of fear or as IDPs due to the the military junta’s oppression.
  • The Interim Chin National Consultative Council expressed its condemnation against the unlawful arrest and detention of Christian religious leaders. They also called for their immediate release.
  • There was a meeting between the Labour Committee of the CRPH and the NUG Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Reportedly, they discussed the problems faced by Myanmar migrants and related solutions.
  • Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stated that the decision of the UN Security Council was a first step and expressed his hope that the international community would take more action.
  • On Wednesday, there was a meeting between the NUG Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration and Township Public Administrations from Sagaing Region, Magwe Region and Bago Region.
  • In a statement for Karen New Year’s Day, the CRPH claimed that only when a new federal democratic nation is established will the youth and future generations be able to enjoy democracy and diversity. The. CRPH added that it was its historical responsibility to equip the current and future generations so that they can safeguard the country.

Revolutionary Activities

  • On Wednesday, the UN Security Council approved of the resolution on Myanmar that called for the military junta to release political prisoners (including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Su Kyi) and to immediately stop their violent activities.
  • In Sanchaung Township in Yangon Region, Wai Phyo Aung and Tun Tun, the junta administration personnel of Wailuwun North Ward, were shot dead at a tea-shop on Thursday morning.
  • The Youth Rights youth organisation, and the NUG/CRPH Support Group (Queensland) provided stationery and medicines to a total of 5,752 students from 46 community-based schools in Sagaing Region
  • In Taze Township, the General Strike Committee marched against the military dictatorship on Thursday, holding anti-junta signs.
  • In Yinmabin North, a combined rally of local villagers marched for the downfall of the military dictatorship on Thursday.
  • In Pakkoku Township in Magwe Region, a military convoy was attacked with mines between Gyi Village and Bonekan Village. Reportedly, four junta soldiers died and two others were seriously injured.
  • In Launglon Township of Tanintharyi Region, anti-junta youth conducted public talks against the military dictatorship on Thursday.
  • In Thayetchaung Township, there was a mine attack on the junta army, killing two junta soldiers.
  • In Thabaitgyin Township in Mandalay Region, PDFs attacked the junta armed forces coming back from the junta inspection gate at the top of Sezingone Village. Reportedly, four junta soldiers and policemen died.
  • In Tamway Township in Yangon Region, there was a bomb attack on the junta army in Tamwaygyi Ka Ward on Thursday morning.
  • In Myitkyina in Kachin State, the General Strike Committee hung a banner saying: “Never forget that Kat Tein Nan and his family are the slaves of the military junta”, on Thursday morning.
  • In Rakhine State, local people called on junta army Regiment (55) to withdraw from the platform of Kyauktaw Maha Muni Pagoda.
  • In Maubin Township, Pantanaw Township and Eainme Township in Ayeyarwady Region, there were flag-raising ceremonies on the special occasion of the Karen New Year on Thursday morning.
  • In Thayetchaung Township in Tanintharyi Region, local people and PDFs celebrated the 85th Karen New Year Day on Thursday.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • In the speech on Karen New Year Day, the Chair of the Karen National Union (KNU) said they should join hands with anti-junta organizations and anti-junta ethnic people.
  • In Namsam Township in Shan North, the Vice-Chair of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) inspected the damage in Konetha Village, caused by junta army airstrikes.
  • In a statement on Karen New Year, the Second Chief Military Officer of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) said they have to fight so that future generations can be free from oppression and ill-treatment.
  • In Hlaingbwe Township under the control of the KNU in Kayin State, there was a flag-raising ceremony on the special occasion of 2762 Karen New Year.

The Military Council

  • The military junta announced that in commemoration of the 75th Independence Day, which falls on 4 January 2023, gold coins containing the image of white elephant would be issued.
  • On the special occasion of Karen New Year, the junta army fired heavy artillery and conducted air strikes in Kawkareik Township in Kayin State on Thursday.
  • In Myeik Township in Tanintharyi Region, the military junta conducted a flag-raising ceremony for the Karen New Year.
  • In honor of the 75th Independence Day, the military junta hoisted the national flag and ethnic flags all over Yangon on Thursday.
  • At the junta court inside Naypyitaw Prison, U Min Thu, the Government Office Minister in the NLD administration and U Ye Min Oo, the Deputy Mayor of Naypyitaw Council Area, received their final verdicts on Wednesday.
  • Reportedly, three ministers of the military junta went to Bangkok in Thailand to attend a meeting about Myanmar’s affairs with representatives of neighbouring countries.
  • The military junta repeated that armed organisations have to give up their arms for the interest of the country and the people. They also called for the right political path via discussions and negotiations.
  • In a meeting with railway staff, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing claimed that there were was the potential for electric trains to run in Myanmar.

Summary on 23 December

  • The UN Security Council adopted its resolution on Myanmar unanimously. It was the first time such a resolution has been passed by the UN. It means the military junta might face more hardships and effective action against them from the international community.
  • Even without regular power throughout the country, the junta leader said that electric trains could run. He seems to say anything he wants and be unhinged from reality.
