Spring Revolution Daily News for 27 August 2023 

The National Unity Government (NUG) 

  • In Sagaing Region, Yinmabin District PDF Regiments (3), (4), (5) and (6) announced on Saturday that they no longer wanted to follow Myanmar’s Royal Dragon Army (MRDA) led by Captain Dragon and thus, they had given back all the weapons purchased by the MRDA. They added that they would stay under the oversight of the Ministry of Defence-NUG. 
  • On Friday, there was a meeting between Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration-NUG and Township People’s Administration plus Township Security Forces. 

Revolution Activities 

  • Reportedly, 551 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) called for the cancellation of a counter-terrorism military exercise, which would be jointly organized by the ASEAN including Myanmar’s junta army and Russia. 
  • Inside the junta army, many commanders have refused to fight in battles. According to the People’s Embrace, Colonel Zayar Tun (DSA 46), Acting Commander of Ka-La-Ya (301) under Regiment (88) based in Magwe, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the martial court for his disobedience. 
  • The CSOs including Justice for Myanmar welcomed the decision of the United States to allow sanctions on the companies and individuals involved in the aviation fuel oil sector of Myanmar. 
  • In Myinmu Township of Sagaing Region, there was a bomb attack via drone on the junta army in Htisaung Village on Saturday morning. Reportedly, there might have been casualties among junta soldiers. 
  • In Sartaung, the junta army raided the camp of local defence forces on 19 August. They then burnt property worth around 1000 lakh MMK. 
  • In Butalin Township, there were bomb attacks via drone on the junta armed forces stationed in the junta general administration department and the junta combined office at about 7:00 am Thursday. Reportedly, 5 junta soldiers died. 
  • In Mandalay, the military junta arrested an eye specialist named Dr. Mya Than and two of his family members, accusing them of supporting the PDFs. They also sealed off his house. 
  • In Kyonepyaw of Ayeyarwady Region, two bombs exploded near the junta inspection gate at 7:30 am Friday. Reportedly, an injured man was arrested. 
  • The junta prison authorities sued 33 political prisoners who had been beaten harshly in the violence case at Pathein Prison. 
  • In Kyankhine Township, a local rally, which used to conduct anti-junta movements almost every day, had to suspend their activities due to tighter security of the junta armed forces. 
  • In Yetashay Township of Bago Region, the junta army shot mortars into Najat Village at about 4:00 pm Friday. Reportedly, a local person was injured. 
  • In Oatpho Township, a member of Union Solidarity and Development Party was shot dead in Kwaychaung Village on Saturday morning. 
  • In Pulaw Township of Taninthayi Region, 2 local people including an old woman aged 72 lost their lives and 5 others were injured within a week. 
  • In Kyaikto Township of Mon State, the junta army was faced with the mines set by the revolution forces near Ywarle Cemetery on the way to Theinzayat. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died and 2 others got injured. 
  • In Demoso Township of Karenni State, the focal person of the Rural Land, on behalf of a donor from Yangon, provided food like toast to the displaced children on Saturday morning. 
  • In Titain of Chin State, a policeman was rewarded 50 lakh MMK for defecting to the CDF along with weapons. Reportedly, he donated back 12 lakh MMK to the Christian Community. 
  • In Hpakant Township of Kachin State, the junta unit (12) under Regiment (33) arrested more than 100 local people as human shields on Thursday. 
  • According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, up to 4007 people have lost their lives due to the junta armed forces since the military coup to 25 August. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • In Kutkhine Township of Northern Shan State, there was a battle between a large number of the junta soldiers and Ta’ang National Liberation Army on Friday evening. Reportedly, there were casualties among junta soldiers. 
  • In Kutkhine Township of Northern Shan State, the TNLA arrested 8 people who had been swindling via the sale of the junta lottery tickets. 
  • In Mabain Township, a combined force of Kachin Independence Army and the PDF attacked the junta army camp on Friday evening. Reportedly, they managed to take control of it on Saturday morning. 
  • Near Laiza, the headquarters of the KIA, there was a battle between the junta army and the KIA on Friday morning. 
  • In Kyaukgyi Township of Bago Region, a local person lost their life and a member of the KNLA got injured due to the mortars shot by the junta army. 
  • In Nyaunglebin District under Karen National Union Brigade (3), the junta army fired mortars to villages intentionally. Reportedly, 4 houses were damaged and a cow was injured. 
  • In Beelin Township of Mon State, a combined force attacked the junta troops on the way to Kyaikto on Friday. 
  • Weapons, which had been purchased from the fund via the Fence Project, were given to the members of Karenni Nationalities Defence Force on Friday. 
  • In Soetashar Township on Thai-Karenni border, there was a battle against the junta army. Reportedly, the revolution forces managed to confiscate the weapons of junta soldiers. 
  • In Fruso Township of Karenni State, the junta army set fire to 8 houses in Htipawso Village on Saturday morning. 

The Military Council 

  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing stated that it is necessary to identify and take action against illegal financial services, which harm the country’s economy. 
  • The junta leader claimed that the cost of living had gone up as there were greedy people monopolizing the prices. 
  • The junta Ministry of Planning, Finance and Investment announced that those working in private health sector were to pay the income tax for 2%. 
  • In the meeting with local traders, the junta Minister of Economics and Commerce called for exports to more countries. 
  • In recent days, the price of the edible oil has skyrocketed. Reportedly, the Chair of the junta UMFCCI claimed that the imported companies would be able to reduce it only through mutual understanding. 
  • According to Myanmar Garment Association, the withdrawal of the activities by world-renowned H&M from Myanmar might cause the job losses and it might also impact the livelihood of the staff. 
  • According to Myanmar Rice Federation, they requested a temporary suspension of issuing new export license for 45 days to control the high prices of rice in the country. 
  • In Mandalay, the military junta ordered the shops to install CCTV by 31 August at the latest. They also threatened that there would be action against those who fail to do so. 
  • According to Mandalay City Development Committee, they, a combination of various teams, will inspect and take action against the vehicles parked without discipline in 6 local townships. 

Summary on 27 August 

  • In the tenure of the military junta, the public may have to face a variety of hardships due to more withdrawals of investment and the high cost of living. In other words, their socio-economic lives may be the lowest in ASEAN. 
  • The defensive war by the revolution forces has gained great momentum with daily battles in Bago, Kayin, Karenni, Sagaing, Magwe and Chin.
