The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • In the new-year statement to CDM staff, Daw Khin Ma Ma Myo, Minister of Economics and Commerce-NUG, said that those who had refused to work under the military junta and joined the CDM would go down in the history of the Spring Revolution.
  • Via social media, Defence Minister U Yi Mon said that a song had been composed in honor of the People Defence Forces (PDF) under the title - ‘Let’s march with the flag of victory’.
  • Dr. Tuja, Minister of Environmental Conservation-NUG, said that in modern society, it was not how much a person could spend that counts. It was just how environmentally-aware he or she is. He also called for contributions to environmental conservation by being thrifty and reusing products if possible instead of forcing the poor to reduce their meals.
  • In the statement for Kayin New Year’s Day, Union Prime Minister Man Win Khine Than said that unity of ethnic people was the sharpest tool for the success of the revolution.
  • Union Prime Minister said that those in Kayin State deserve thanks and honor as they had provided assistance with union spirit at the time of public anguish due to the lawless activities of the military junta the previous year.
  • On Sunday, CRPH stated that the public must be in unity to put an end to military dictators who had seized power by force.
  • Naing Kaung Ywet, Deputy Minister of Defence, called on Mon people to take part in the fight against the military dictatorship.
  • Acting President called on international community to recognize the NUG, reject the military and cut off financial sources and weapon procurement of the junta.

Revolution Activities

  • In the south of Kalay Township in Sagaing Region, there was fighting between CDF (KKG) and the junta army stationing in Kyantha Village at about 8:00 am Sunday. Due to mine explosions, there might be casualties among junta soldiers.
  • In a village of Shwebo Township, there was a march against the military dictatorship on Sunday morning.
  • In Tantsi Township, a troop contingent of over 100 junta soldiers was attacked with mines by a combined force of local PDFs near Kabaunggya Village at about 5:00 pm Saturday. Reportedly, about 10 junta soldiers died.
  • In Indaw Township, an armed group opened fire at Meza Police Station at about 11:00 pm Saturday.
  • In 2-day fighting in Wetlet Township, over 40 junta soldiers died. After that, 2 military helicopters fired at the area. Consequently, a member of local PDF lost his life.
  • In Salingyi Township, a combined force of local PDFs conducted an attack at Nyaungbingyi Police Station at about 4:00 am Sunday. Reportedly, over 10 members of the junta armed forces, including military officer, died and many local people had to run away.
  • At about 1:40 pm Sunday, the junta armed forces set fire to Karbaunggya Village in Tantsi Township.
  • As a 298-day protest, a combined rally of Salingyi North and Yinmabin East marched against the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • In Ye-U Township, there was a fighting between the junta army and local PDF near Parami Village on Sunday. Reportedly, 7 junta soldiers died.
  • According to Debeyin PDF, the junta armed forces arrested 2 people in Shwedakan Village and killed them near Gwebingone Village.
  • According to Yangon residents, the junta army ruthlessly beat a person at upper block in the downtown area of 38th street corner at about 9:50 am Sunday.
  • In Thanlyin Township, the junta army shot at actor Ko Tin Ko in an attempt to arrest him. According to local residents, he was injured and in critical condition as he was not allowed to receive medical treatment.
  • Without confessing their mass murder of over 35 people in Fruso Township in Karenni State on 24th December, the military junta accused that they were the people who had run away in secret after shooting at Loikaw Airport with a projectile.
  • According to Students’ Union of Nationalities Youth Resource Development Degree College (Yangon), Paku Moe, a first-year Physics major student, was among over 35 people who had been burnt to death by the junta armed forces near Moso Village in Fruso Township of Karenni State.
  • On Sunday, a combined rally of Chauk Township Basic Education Students’ Affairs and Magwe General Public Strike Committee conducted a sticker campaign against the military dictatorship.
  • In Ngapudaw Township of Ayeyarwaddy Region, the junta armed forces stationed in schools and made searches in forests.
  • According to Irrawaddy Local Defense Force, an inflammable bottle was thrown into the compound of transportation department in Pathein at about 4:43 am Saturday.
  • In Kawthaung District of Taninthayi Region, many soldiers from the junta armed forces based in Kamautgyi Town ran away as they did not want to join frontline battles.
  • In Chanmya Thazi Township of Mandalay Region, a man aged over 60 was shot on Saturday evening.
  • On Sunday, Mandalay Monks’ Union led an anti-junta movement.

Ethnic Armed Organizations

  • In Dimawso Township of Kayah State, a combined force of KNDF, KA and PDF conducted a surprise attack at the junta army stationing near the pagoda compound next to police station on Saturday. KNDF announced on Sunday that 5 junta soldiers had died on the spot.
  • In Dimawso Township of Karenni State, there were ongoing battles. KNDF announced on Sunday that one of their members had been injured and lost his life during medical treatment.
  • According to an officer of KNLA, the military junta sent a letter to KNU Regiment (1) not to accept PDFs in their areas.
  • In Kwethay Area of Phapun District under control of KNU Regiment (5), the junta army was attacked with mines by KNLA on Friday evening. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died.
  • In Kyaukdaw Township of Rakhine State, ULA/AA organized friendly football matches among Rakhine, Muslim and Rakhine ethnic people in Bomin community from 19th December to 1st January.

The Military Council

  • Regarding the statement of Martin Griffiths, coordinator of the UN Humanitarian and Emergency Assistance, on the incident related to the deaths of civilians near Moso Village in Fruso Township of Kayah State, the military junta responded that those people had been shot because they were just PDF members in plain clothes.
  • On the occasion of Kayin new-year day, the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing sent a statement saying that he believed Kayin people would learn from the past and feel refreshed in the new year.
  • Dr. Charlie Than, the junta minister of industry, instructed for Zayya Waddy sugar factory to grow and produce required sugarcane on their own.
  • In Kayin State, a large number of the junta armed forces conducted heavy attacks around Laykaykaw Area and thus, local residents had to run away. The junta newspaper said that local people were returning home.
  • On Thursday, three young people from Shwelinban Village in laingthaya Township of Yangon Region were sentenced lifelong imprisonments by the military junta under accusations of actively participating in protests and supporting the NUG and PDF.
  • In Mindat of Chin State, newly-arrived members of the junta armed forces, together with their family members, were being provided with shooting training at university hill and around (9) mile ground.

Summary on 2nd January

  • In response to the statement by coordinator of the UN Humanitarian and Emergency Assistance, the military junta wrote back implying that they had shot dead those people in Fruso Township as they had been PDF members. In other words, they confessed that they had killed them. The victims included women, children and staff of international organizations. The response of the military junta is just evidence of their war crimes.
  • As for Karenni, Kayin, Chin and Sagaing, they had battles on a daily basis. In Sagaing Region, local PDFs managed to shape their operation with guerrilla attacks. Reportedly, KIA was able to enter to inside areas and joined hands with PDFs in battles.
  • AA has been able to control many areas in Rakhine State and they have been carrying out activities to bring life to their administration. In addition, they have been building social harmony among ethnic people in their state without discrimination. It is such a good prospect for their future.
