The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • According to the NUG Ministry of Human Rights, an unlawfully-detained person lost their life, 70 others were injured and another one was still missing due to the violent activities of junta staff in Pathein Prison on Thursday and Friday.

Revolutionary Activities

  • Sagaing District PDF Regiment (1) announced that the junta army in partnership with the Pyu Saw Htee militia had killed Venerable Gandasara, a Patron of Sidagu Buddhist University. They also claimed that it was a war crime.
  • For the children of the IDPs in Sagaing Region, S&C opened its fourth school.
  • In Monywa in Sagaing Region, the Black Rangers Force conducted a warning attack using grenades on the Super One KTV, a junta pillar.
  • In Salingyi Township, the junta armed forces have been burning local villages where there is no fighting. Consequently, local residents have had to run away.
  • In Sagaing Township, there was a mine attack on a military convoy on the way to Monywa on Sunday morning. According to People’s Army to Fight Dictatorship, there were casualties amongst the junta soldiers.
  • In Dibeyin Township, Taze Township and Salingyi Township, the junta armed forces have been setting fire to people’s houses in villages where there is no fighting. Consequently, local people have had to run away.
  • On Sunday, a rally in Yinmabin North marched for the end of the military dictatorship.
  • In some townships in Sagaing Region, the internet was reconnected at about 1:00 am on 4 January. However, the blackout was resumed at about 10:00 pm on 5 January.
  • In Shwebo Township, there was a surprise close range attack on the junta army and Pyu Saw Htee militia on Saturday. According to a spokesperson from the Black Wolf Army, two junta soldiers died.
  • According to Dancing with Ladies, the public can contribute to their 4th program to crack down on the junta Mid Regional Military Headquarters.
  • Somewhere in Yangon, Octopus Young Social Group conducted an anti-junta movement on Sunday, hanging a banner displaying a curse from the people on the military junta.
  • In Thonekwa Township in Yangon Region, there was a raid into Gadonepaw Police Station at about 4:00 am on Sunday. Reportedly, the station was burnt down.
  • In North, South and East Dagon Myothit Townships, the junta administrators stated that there would be data about household population collected from 9 January.
  • Since 1 January, the military junta has been announcing through loud speakers in wards that all households in big cities like Yangon and Mandalay must have fire prevention equipment in front of the house.
  • In Busan in South Korea, a combined rally of Myanmar and Korean people protested against Myanmar’s military dictatorship. Reportedly, Daegu Sayardaw talked about the importance of unity and support for the revolution.
  • In Tanintharyi Region, the junta armed forces set fire to nearly 190 houses.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • In Hsunprabun Township in Kachin State, there was a battle on Saturday. According to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), there were a large number of casualties amongst the junta soldiers.
  • In Mindat Township in Chin State, two troops of junta armed forces have been occupying the Mindat-Matupi Road from 6 January.
  • A CDM soldier, who had defected to CDF Mindat, called on other members of the junta armed forces to join the public together with their weapons.

The Military Council

  • The junta propaganda team announced that the junta leader had provided 100,000 MMK to each of the 40 babies born on Independence Day.
  • According to the junta Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, appointment tokens would be issued every Saturday for Myanmar migrants in Thailand who want to extend their passports.
  • The military junta announced that it had arrested the abbot of Intain Nyaung Oat Monastery in Nyaung Shwe Township on 27 December 2022. They accused him of having contact with PDFs.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said that the national population census would be conducted, if necessary for the upcoming general election.
  • The military junta issued an order that every house in the country must have fire prevention equipment in front of the house. Those who do not will be imprisoned and face fines ranging from 50,000 MMK to 200,000 MMK.

Summary on 9 January

  • The military junta have arrested even the monks who just express their disapproval. Besides, they have publicly committed war crimes by killing the monks and destroying nearby religious buildings whenever they suffer great losses in battles against PDFs.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing instructed that a national population census must be carried out for the election, the only escape for the military junta. However, the junta has been demanding money using threats.
  • At a time of modern fire extinguishing equipment in the international community, the junta issued an order for ordinary items such as sand bags and water bags, which were in use a long time ago. It highlights how poorly qualified the military junta is to rule the country.
