Min Thway Thit, a student leader and leading activist, was released from Insein Prison on 24 February.

“This morning (February 24), Min Thway Thit was released from Insein prison after serving his full sentence. Everyone who has shown concern and gave their regards is very appreciated,” Yadanar Su Po Khaing, Min Thway Thit’s wife wrote on social media.

Min Thway Thit will have medical checkups and plans to rest.

“For now, he has a stomach problem, back pain and poor sight in both his eyes. So, he needs to rest and do a medical checkup,” his wife noted.

Yadanar Su Po Khaing requested understanding that her husband would not be able to give an interview to the media.

Min Thway Thit was arrested by the junta troops on 1 February, 2021 and he was sent to Insein Prison after one month of interrogation in detention.

A special tribunal in Insein prison charged him with locomotive management act, article 95 and sentenced to 1 year in prison.

On 30 December 2021 he was sentenced to one year imprisonment for driving an unregistered vehicle without a license under Section 95 of the Vehicle Safety and Motor Vehicle Management Law. He was previously imprisoned in 2015 for his role in the protests against the new education bill and released in 2016. He was also among four fined 30,000 kyat for organising a protest without permission on 7 July 2019 to commemorate Ne Win’s 1962 massacre of student activists.

Min Thway Thit served as the secretary and CEC member of Ba Ka Tha (Burma’s Student Union) from 2012 to 2016 and was a peace activist before the coup.
