Taiwan leader's US trip 'private and unofficial': State Department

"Transits by high-level Taiwan authorities are not visits, they are private and unofficial," Vedant Patel, a US State Department spokesman, tells reporters ahead of President Tsai Ing-wen's passing through the US en route to Central America. "These transits have always been consistent with long-standing US practice," Patel adds. During his briefing, the spokesperson also touches on Myanmar's junta's move to dissolve the party of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
