A teenage girl was allegedly raped by a Myanmar junta soldier in Mongyaung Township in eastern Shan State.

A 17-year-old ethnic Shan girl was raped by the soldier on the side of the main road near Hongkyant Village on 27 June.

News of the incident has just been released.

“We do not know which battalion the rapist is from. Two or three junta soldiers were asking for pedestrians’ property and money near Hongkyant Village,” a local villager told Mizzima.

The victim was on her motorcycle when the soldiers stopped her and asked for money.

“The girl said she had nothing to pay. Then one of junta soldiers grabbed her and took her nearby bushes and raped her,” the villager, who preferred not to be named, said.

The alleged rapist was arrested by local residents and handed over to Mongyaung Township police station but he was taken back to his battalion, locals say.
