Total sanctions on military needed

In addition to the sanctions targeting the regime, there is a need for comprehensive sanctions to overthrow the military dictatorship according to one source.

"We need to implement all kinds of sanctions, including foreign investment in addition to sanctions on military-owned businesses linked to the military”, Ma Khine Zar Aung, chairwoman of the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).

She said all foreign investment should be withdrawn even though it is true that the unemployment rate in Myanmar is rising.

There are still hundreds of foreign business investments in Myanmar with hundreds of thousands of workers. It is said to have survived for fear of losing workers' job opportunities, in fact, the rights of workers have been violated by the junta for profit.

Even though foreign branded companies that deliver goods to Myanmar are not affiliated with the military, they are just providing financial support to the military council by taking advantage of the weakening of the judiciary in Myanmar. Therefore, comprehensive sanctions need to be taken in addition to military-owned business.

Workers' rights such as severance pay, minimum pay, social security pay, overtime pay are being violated and in addition there is no real payment, workers are being fired from their job at any time. Ma Khine Zar Aung said that under the military regime, workers’ unions are no longer dealing with the law as before..

U Kyaw Ni, the Deputy Minister of Labour Affairs of the National Unity Government, said that if the National Unity Government was able to establish itself in key liberated areas in response to the rising unemployment rate, it would cooperate with pro-NUG countries to provide humanitarian assistance and unemployment.

Despite rising unemployment rates, there have been calls for foreign investment to be lifted as a form of total sanctions on the junta.
