Two killed and monk injured by Myanmar junta in Palaw Township

Two people were killed and a monk was injured in junta attacks on Palaw Township in Tanintharyi’s Myeik District on 13 February.

A monk had to be taken to Palaw Hospital after a junta artillery shell landed on his monastery in Nantaung Village, in Palaw Township.

A female internally displaced person (IDP) died as she was being taken to hospital after having been injured by artillery shells that hit Shatpon Village, in Palaw Township.

Koe Soe Pu, a 48-year-old inhabitant of Toh Village in Palaw Township was shot dead in his home by junta soldiers.

“He was shot dead by Military Council soldiers while they were going into his house to get drinking water”, said a local resident.

The junta soldiers also set fire to six houses in Toh Village, having already burnt down houses in the village in January.

As a result of the junta setting fire to homes in Toh Village over 4,000 residents have fled.

According to local people’s defence forces (PDFs) there has been a lot of fighting in Palaw Township recently.

“There has been a lot of fighting around Palaw Township. Residents are being killed and buildings are being torched”, said a PDF fighter based in Palaw.

Palaw was one of the 38 Townships where the junta imposed martial law on 2 February.
