Twosday’ protests take place in Mandalay despite tight security

Although Myanmar junta troops were patrolling across the city, protests against the military dictatorship were widespread in Mandalay on the morning of 22 February.

The date on Tuesday 22 February 2022, or 22/2/22 was a palindrome, an unusual occurrence that some people believe brings luck.

In Myanmar, revolutionary forces called on the people to protest against the Military Council on that day in what they dubbed the “Six Twos Revolution.”

“The military junta’s troops with some 10 military vehicles have been patrolling since the morning. They are very frightened that there will be protests for the Six Twos Revolution on 22 February. Junta troops are patrolling the city with guns threatening people and telling them not to protest, “said a Mandalay local on 22 February.

As well as military patrols there were armed troops dressed in civilian clothes standing by in cars at intersections.

Posters and banners were put up all over Mandalay on the morning of 22 February.

A banner on U Pein Bridge read: "Let’s reassemble for the Six Twos Movement"

The monks of the Mandalay Sangha Union put up posters that said: “Going on a food-collecting strike to revolt.”

A poster from the comrades of the General Alliance said: “We have been fighting together on the Six Twos Memorial Day, by rising up and striking.”

Student unions, led by the Mandalay District Students' Union also took part in the Six Twos Revolution, by marching in the streets of downtown Mandalay.
