ULA-AA warns against waste of donations and price gouging in wake of Cyclone Mocha

The chairman of the United League of Arakan, Major General Twan Mrat Naing, has asked the Rakhine people to avoid wasting donations and exploiting people by increasing the goods prices during the Cyclone Mocha disaster.

The chairman said this during a post-cyclone emergency speech given on 16 May.

He also admitted that although the Arakan People’s Government is trying to overcome the Cyclone Mocha disaster with all resources, it is insufficient to cover everything.

Therefore, he urged the international organizations, NGOs, INGOs, local social welfare organizations, and expatriate Arakanese people to help.

In the case of aid, General Twan Mrat Naing requested to work with the Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Office (HDCO) established by the Arakan People’s Government to help prevent the waste of donations.

He stated that Arakanese people from everywhere did their best in helping during natural disasters, war disasters, and catastrophes.

Moreover, he also warned the traders dealing with basic food items to avoid exploitation when the public is suffering.

Cyclone Mocha has caused heavy damage in Rakhine State.

Major General Twan Mrat Naing, stated that there is an urgent need for shelter, drinking water, food, and medicine for the public and, due to the electricity outage, the telecommunication, internet connection and other important basic needs are needed to be handled as soon as possible.

ULA-AA had moved more than 100,000 people in the administrative area to safe places before the cyclone hit, and local social welfare organizations had helped in the evacuation as well.
