United Nations Secretary spokesperson Farhan Haq has told the UN in New York that at least 114 children between the ages of 3 and 17 have been murdered by the Myanmar junta’s security forces since the February 2021 coup.

Speaking at the UN headquarters, Mr Haq expressed concern for the death toll, noting that at least 18 having been killed in January alone.

He added that countless others have been injured or maimed, and that the UN Children's Fund for Burma is deeply concerned by the growing wave of violence against children in the country.

Over 1,500 civilians are reported to have been killed by the Myanmar junta since the coup, many of them during protests or during detention.
