The United Nations says its special envoy for Myanmar will visit Indonesia, where a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will be held this weekend, reports NHK.

A UN spokesperson said that Christine Schraner Burgener will fly to Jakarta to meet the ASEAN leaders attending Saturday's summit.

The spokesperson noted that the UN secretary-general has been asking ASEAN leaders to prevent the crisis in Myanmar from deepening.

The special envoy is expected to ask the leaders to put pressure on Myanmar's military to break the impasse in the country, where security forces have been in deadly clashes with anti-coup protesters, according to the report.
