UN spokesman cites concern over Myanmar junta ditching of NLD

The United Nations spokesperson for the UN Secretary General has expressed concern this week over the Myanmar junta move to dissolve Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party as they prepare for an election.

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said on 28 March in a press conference that the UN was concerned by the junta move.

“I think this is another step in the direction that we would not like to be going into. Right? We want to see a return to democracy in Myanmar. We would like to see the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other people who continue to be detained, and we will continue to work towards that,” Dujarric told a media conference.

The junta set a deadline of 28 March for political parties to register or re-register ahead of a planned election that they initially tabled for this year but may be held in 2024.
