Yangon saw demonstrators take to the streets, dodging junta police and army, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising.

In the morning, Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS), a political party and Youth for a New Society (YNS) which work for a peaceful and equal Burma, conducted a demonstration to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising downtown in Yangon where the Military Council had tightened security.

An action to hang shirts with the numbers “8888” on Sule flyover on Sule Road, Yangon was carried out to protest against the military dictatorship.

“The people’s revolution, that was relaunched on 1 February 2021, is a continuation of the battle against the military dictatorship that everyone from all classes took part in 35 years ago,” the DPNS wrote on its social media page.

“Furthermore, we sincerely encourage the continuation of efforts to eliminate the military dictatorship that has oppressed civilians for many years and to fight for the liberation of all classes of the population, including highlanders and plainsmen,” DPNS added.

The 8888 Uprising was a pro-democracy movement led primarily by students and young activists on 8 August 1988. Then it was marked as the largest multi-class mass movement in the history of Myanmar since gaining independence.

In addition, the Yangon People's Strike organized a red umbrella movement in Yangon's downtown this morning.

Yangon People's Strike, a democratic revolution group, said it encourages people from all over the country to join the Red Umbrella Movement by sending photos of red umbrellas with the letter "8" to the Yangon People's Strike social media page, to mock the junta. They said they will continue to upload photos of people participating in the movement.

The Umbrella Strike Movement, known as the "Revolutionary Generation Rebellion," gained significant attention in 2022 during the Yangon People's Strike. This notable event received extensive coverage from the international press.
