Villagers from Welgyi Chaung and Linsin Yoarthit villages in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, were arrested and tortured by the Myanmar Army according to allegations made by other villagers, reports Burma News International quoting a report by Narinjara News April 30.
The villagers allege 70 villagers are still under arrest and were tortured from April 23 to 28. Soldiers accused the villagers of supporting the dissident Arakan Army.
Members of the Arakan Army have recently clashed with Myanmar army troops in Rakhine State, where they have been largely dormant. The AA has reportedly been assisting rebel fighters in the Kokang region of Shan State.
