All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) and Mon National Party (MNP) leaders will meet on 18 March to discuss merging the parties, party officials told Hinthar Media.
Dr Min Kyi Win, a central executive member of the MNP said: “First we will discuss this issue off the record, then we will have discussions about holding a meeting between the top leaders following this meeting. We want to know what views the top leaders hold about uniting the parties.”
He also said that only representatives from the MNP and AMDP will be attending the meeting and that representatives from the Women’s Party (Mon) would not be attending.
Dr Aung NaingOo, a central committee member of the AMDP said: “Although we want to work on uniting the Mon parties it is impossible at the moment, so we are just meeting to discuss ways to do that and what kinds of work programs should be implemented in the formation of a single party.”
He also said that Mon political parties will need to find a way to unite if they are to prevent a repeat of the 2015 election results at the next general election.
Central Committee members from both parties and civil society organisations have criticised the leaders of both parties for showing no interest in merging the two parties.
