The government of Myanmar and leaders of several ethnic armed groups agreed today, 9 September, to sign a long-awaited nationwide ceasefire agreement in the first week of October.
Senior advisor Hla Maung Shwe of Myanmar Peace Centre has said it is likely that the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) will be signed on either Oct 1, 2 or 3.
The talks had hit an impasse over how many of the ethnic groups would be allowed to sign the agreement.The government has apparently accepted ethnic leader’s demands to include at least 17 groups.
