Military tensions between RCSS, TNLA rise in northern Shan State

Military tensions between the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS/SSA) and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has increased after fighting in Nammatu Township in northern Shan State on 7 December, according to both sides.

RCSS/SSA said that the fighting broke out in Nammatu Township, but the location is far from residential quarters, so there were no civilian casualties.

“Currently, there is no fighting. However, I have heard that both sides are still ready to fight,” said RCSS/SSA spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Sai Oam Hkay. “TNLA said that the RCSS invaded their area. But the RCSS has been in Nammatu for more than 30 years.”

TNLA spokesperson Major Mai Eaik Kyaw said, “We tried to avoid fighting because of the ceasefire. Although we tried to avoid the conflict, the RCSS launched a military offensive and invaded the area again. Then fighting broke out.”
