Myanmar committed to tackling climate change – State Counsellor

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, delivered a video statement and made Myanmar’s commitments to tackle climate change at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit held on 12 December 2020, state media reported.

The Summit was convened by the United Nations, United Kingdom, and France, in partnership with Chile and Italy to mark the 5th Anniversary of the Paris Agreement.

In her statement, the State Counsellor announced Myanmar’s intention to submit its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) by the end of the year. The NDC, she added, aims to reduce over 243 million tonnes of CO2 by increasing the share of renewable energy to 39% and reducing the net emission from the forestry sector by 25%.

She also stated that Myanmar has targeted to reduce 105.2 million tCO2e in energy sector and 123.6 million tCO2e in forestry subsection respectively, and the Myanmar’s National Adaption Plan for climate change is projected to be completed by 2024.
